I am sure this has been discussed before.

From the perspective of someone who doesn't know what they are doing it is not intuitive how to message someone in your contact history.

I should be able to select send messages from the same location that it says invite as friend. I should just click send message and it should just open chat with them as the contact. Maybe it was because they just jumped.

Maybe I am just missing some other simple mechanism to manage the same task. Unfortunately they took my rapid acceleration towards them as a hostile action and left the area before I could see them in the current contact list.

I don't want the game to feel like an MMO but currently it seems difficult to say hi.

I agree. You should be allowed one message to someone in your contact history.

I had to PM someone in the forum to reply to an in-game message while I was AFK.

I suspect that FD is worried that it will be abused by the less savoury element among us. But there is the report function to counter this.

Maybe just the ability to send a comms request with an initial message with a character limit. If they accept the comms request then you can chat. If they ignore it then you can't send another comms request for a certain time period.

The ship could say "Incoming comms request...." or something like that. Then you see the initial message when you check the request.
