space station design suggestion
I'd like to describe an interesting design for a space station. AFAIK this was first mentioned in Polish sci-fi book called "Zagubiona Przyszłość" (Lost Future) by Krzysztof Boruń & Andrzej Trepka (but it was a space ship there). Unfortunately no image is available. you've got to rely on your imagination and my English. It looks similar to the space station seen in Space Odyssey: 2001, also we had similar station in Frontier: Elite II. But there's one GREAT difference. Originally, the space station had only one deck (ring). The station (ship) in the book has 100+ concentric rings, the ceiling of the most external ring was the floor of the next one. Each one was smaller and smaller. What's this for? It's soo simple: while rotating, each deck has different "gravity" level!! The farther from center, the "gravity" is stronger despite the fact that the station is a solid, one-piece unit. Ashley in todays newsletter explores different needs for different gravities, possibly requiring multiple modules. This case allows to have 100 gravity levels in one single unit. Originally, Celestia (this is how the ship was called in the book) was 1000 meters in diameter.
