Recently had a gaming revalation (it does tie into ED at the end!)

This is not initially directly an Elite thing, but it certainly ties in I think to a lot of complaints on here.

For the longest of times on my xbox i was an achievement addict. I would muck about doing all sorts of things to get that full GS. I still think they are good for those who enjoy this IF THEY ARE DONE WELL, but for OCD people like me they can be a nightmare if they involve pointless time sinks.

So step 1) I jumped ship to PC and actively ignored steam achievements..... but still I found myself looking for hidden extras which are essentially put in to prolong game time..... but, with so many untouched games in my collection the LAST thing i need is making my games even longer.

And finally step 2) the shackles have been broke!
Last week I picked up a ps3 cheap to play all those exclusive games i missed out on. There are so many games there is no way i will get to play them fully so i am just banging through them and you know what.... I cant remember the last time I had so much enjoyment just playing a game.

not traipsing around looking for "letters from dead people" or "hidden treasure" or "lost artifacts", All I am doing is primary missions and the odd side quest IF it looks good or picking something up if it is in plain sight.

I am gonna stick with the PS3 for a bit before going back to my PC with this new found enthusiasm. maybe now i will get to complete skyrim and far cry 3 after all, which will free me to to START tombraider, the witcher trilogy, deus ex, the metro games etc etc etc.

I can maybe even face going back to dragonage and mass effect now too!.

Say YES to great gaming and NO to pointless grinding for collectables :D

So how does this relate to ED you may ask if you got this far.... well to anyone playing just to grind out to an anaconda.... STOP!. (unless you are actively enjoying that of course) but so many people are complaining that it is boring doing this. All I can say is take a step back, maybe have a breather and when you come back just do what you enjoy doing. So what if it does not max your credits per hr, honestly as someone who has flown an anaconda (in beta I do not have one yet as i refuse to dull grind in ED, its too important a game to me for that) you are not missing that much.

IF you make it your mission just to grind to that ship, once you get there it will be a hollow victory... just enjoy playing the game for playing the games sake and the credits will come on their own. and if you are not enjoying it, for goodness sake take a breather and play one of the countless other games you probably have (and if anything like me probably untouched)

fly safe CMDRs and sorry if too long a ramble. :)

as part of the PC fraternity, I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Great post. I agree to some point, but I also do like doing side missions in games like Skyrim etc, if they are done well and not just simply a timesink. In Elite I do grind a lot to get those bigger ships, finally got that Python and now this will probably be the last ship I buy, because an Anaconda is just wayy to expensive and it will take me a long time to fit out this python with the best modules. But now that I have this bigger ship I am finding myself doing non-grindy things. Problem is, there aren't many things to do. And I only have enough money to loose my ship maybe 3 to 4 times, after that I'd have to start all over again.. So while it may be more fun to jump into SSS or do high risk missions, smuggling, I don't think I have the luxury to do those things because I could lose months of work. And I believe this is holding me back to just do whatever I like.

Spidy I see your point.... but in which case if you blow up a few times use a vulture to do them. less risk and you will soon get some money back.... on launch money outside of trading was hard to come by, but now imo money is so easy to make esp as you can double dip a lot of the time.

(ie fancy doing some bounty hunting killing pirates, you can do that, get the bounties and also get BB missions to pay you - often multiple ones from different factions so you get paid twice or more for doing what you were going to do anyway).

and as soon as you get tired with what content we have, as i said, play something else for a bit. And dont forget IF you are enjoying doing something then that is NOT grinding... my point was i was doing side stuff in games becasue i felt i had to and not because i wanted to... that is what is daft imo.... not doing them becasue you enjoy them. :)

You are right, of course I can do these things in cheaper ships. But why did I grind for the big one then? :D
I am having a lot of fun still, and I usually change games regularly when it gets boring.
And I never do those achievements just to completely finish the game, its just too boring for me. I do them because there is some reward at the end which I really want, and allthough I still grind for it I usually still have fun doing it, and if not, it's gotta be worth it!

Yes indeed, Achievements are definitely a "Developer Mind Trick" - but they are fun sometimes! ( <shakes fist at the sky> "Darn you Gamification!") - shame they have not been implemented on the Steam version of Elite at the very least.

Spidy, I am almost in the same situation. I finally got an Anaconda which took ages as I'm not into grinding and I've been afraid to poke my head out of my solo/group foxhole because of rebuy costs.
A few nights ago I bought a sidewinder just to pick up a bounty at an outpost and I've been having great fun in open zipping about doing missions. I tried my hand at smuggling for the first time and nearly got blown up by security forces... Didn't bother me. I got interdicted by an Anaconda and boosted away with a smile on my face. I've made around 1mcr in a few days, which I could have made in half an hour in my conda, but I'm just enjoying having fun again.
I'll use the Anaconda for CGs but its so liberating to not have that massive rebuy cost hanging over my head at the moment.

Well, I always play in open and I never had any bad experience with other CMDRs, just bad luck with npcs sometimes. Smaller ships are fun to play around with but for trading there is no alternative for a big ship like python, t9 or conda. But then again trading is kinda safe if you know how not to get interdicted, and also not really fun, just relaxing.
But yeah, if you don't care to make much money because you already have the ship you always wanted, then one can play around with smaller ships where you earn enough money to rebuy them. For that 1 Mio. CR you can rebuy a lot if in a cobra or whatever, but for bigger ships the income doesn't scale that well with these more interesting and fun missions and activities, because generally they don't scale at all.

There's only so much fun you can get from a game that has its content generated by the computer, especially after you've experienced everything there is to it.

I have exactly the same problem in Dragon Age Inquisition so yesterday I decided to do the main plot missions as soon as they are available and no longer look for every map marker on every area.
