Newcomer / Intro Recommended cockpit addons?

Hey all, I was wondering if you guys can recommend any addons for Elite?
I'm particularly looking for something that allows me to change the colour scheme of my cockpit, and an in-cockpit tool that allows me to type down notes about places of interests without leaving the game. I did find something called 'commander's log' but it turned out to be an out of game tool that I had to alt-tab to in order to use it.:(

Thanks in advance!

Might I suggest:

Pray tell me, what ancient artifact left by a previous civilization is this?! :)

Joking aside, that really is the best cockpit addon to have. I actually bought a new notebook for the occasion. Gives you a nice, physical Captain's Log feel.

I hear ya! - There are no in game tools right now for this afaik. But, you could always invest in some software to capture speech and it writes it down in a Word document or something. Like those commercials for that Dragon something or other speech software. Then it will TRULY feel like a captains log. Just set a shortcut for a mic command: "Captains Log Supplemental: Set notification to re-assign boost key. I dont ever want to get that close to a type 9 again. "

:D Thanks

And your cortana bit just gave me another Idea. I know many programs already have something like this with the Text-to-Speech software, and for all I know the Dragon Speech Recognition software may have it too...but you could then get software to "read" the logs that you create in different voices. So now you have a way of creating a log, and then having it read back to you in, lets say a: Sexy computer voice (EVE from mass effect) or a male voice - c3P0 if you wanted...the list goes on...Ill have to do some research into this, because that sounds like a great feature.

Im sure the voice packs that they sell for ED could even be configured to read them back to you - great idea - have some rep back ;)

Edit: So apparently PC World thinks the standard speech recognition software that comes with Windows is actually pretty decent. Just type Speech Recognition in the search box in the start menu to find it. I think Im gonna play around with it when I get home tonight

My BPC Market Tool (see link in sig), lets you write notes for any system/station, and will read them back to you when you next jump into that system if you want. :) (although it too is not is game).

You might be able to get voiceattack to do the speech recognition and write it to slopes.
You can do a lot of amazing things with va. (and with slopey)

I would recommend a button to turn on the full lighting in the cockpit... Just for fun ;)

Also, a decent set of reverse mirrors would be great! (in a form of a camera+display).

Sun window as a shipyard addon would be very useful for all those Adders and alike...

Maybe a Tetris game for long journeys to space stations 10kls+... (kidding! ... or not?)

And I'm missing HUD just like in old Frontier where one could turn sky objects labels on (a "clickable" sky done using HUD would be most appreciated).

...more ideas to come :)

Oh nice! I didnt know there was already something like that out there. Ill take a look at it tonight when I get on. +1 for you!

Quick question though: Have you or anyone else you know successfully used speech recognition software either on its own or in conjunction with your software? To me, being able to speak your "Captains Log" just sounds like it would be fun. And to be able to have your tool read it back...well, thats even better ;)

I've been playing with it yes, but it's not ready for Captains log type of notes. If I was going to implement that, I'd add a "Record Captains Log", and instead start recording the mic feed and save it as an MP3, which would be better than trying to recognise it.

So far, I've only added in commands to the BPC for reading me back data (like "where is the nearest xxx"), but I've not gone any further with it as so many people use Voice Attack, the BPC may interfere with it (and I've not tested the two together properly), so that feature isn't in the public version.

Digital assistants only (I was only half kidding about the Cortana part, she can take notes without much trouble and it's quicker than writing.) They work surprisingly well. Right now, they suffer from a lack of customizability, though, but with Win 10 on the horizon, a voice controlled 'Captain's Log' app might actually be possible.
