Newcomer / Intro Recommended credits

I've got a little over 600,000 credits from just simple grinding and want to step up to the cobra mk 3 as my first all around ship from the sidey. What amount of credits do you think would be wise to have for just the stock cobra and not dealing with any load outs? Would 1 mil do the trick?

Common prices for all the ships can be found here --> https://inara.cz/elite/shipyard/

Prices do vary a bit depending on the system.

Flying a stock ship is usually a mistake -- they are weak and slow and can't travel very far.

The standard advice is to have at least 3 times the price of the ship before you buy it.

And don't forget the rebuy insurance amount.

I would focus ship purchases towards making more money until you've got a balance that gives you freedom to purchase whatever you'd like without concern.
Heres some advice i gave on another thread:

"I've recently started playing and i built up money pretty quickly by just trading jumping between two systems, one with a refinery economy, the other a high tech economy. Taking silver in the one direction, then performance enhancers in the other is a quick way to get onto a rapid growth curve. Do a few runs until you can afford a bigger ship (and still have money left for a full silver load), upgrade to a bigger ship, repeat. I used hauler -> type6 -> type7 -> type9. By type-9 you can carry about 650-700 and make about 20million per loop. With systems one jump apart and stations reasonably close to the primary star, its about 5 mins per iteration and with a landing and supercruise assist module its pretty effortless"

Thanx....didnt know about the variance in cost based on systems. I did know about the 3 times the cost of the ship rule.

Stations in Li Yong Rui‘s control all offer a discount on ship and module prices.

The three times guide should be considered a minimum and not include the trade in value of what you are flying.

As was stated above stock ships can be very poor, back when I started buying a Python with insufficient funds for some good modules was reckoned to be a fast way to be back in a free Sidewinder.

I assume your in Solo mode and out of the safety zone so to speak when your new?

i play in open - haven't had any hostile encounters with other players yet, only positive ones - though im sure theres always a small risk, i find it more interesting and enjoy saying hi as i occasionally pass another cmdr. I was kicked out the new player zone as a result of a docking mishap which got me sent to a detention center so i was only there for a couple of minutes on my very first session in the game. Overall i wouldnt worry about dangers - theres the odd pirate that will chase you, but generally if you're trading you'll mainly be in super cruise so you just avoid combat by winning the interdictions (just slow down a little to make your controls more responsive)
