Recommended game settings for new PC build?

I built a new PC as my last was built in 2015 when I started playing ED, it no longer cut the mustard for modern games.

My new build list is
Ryzen 7 7700 3.8GHz base (5.3GHz max boost but not overclocked)
Sapphire Pulse RX7800xt 16Gb, Adrenaline shows current driver version 24.12.1 & up to date
Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX
Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30 32Gb (2x16Gb) AMD EXPO
Corsair RM850 Gold psu
Windows 11 Home
Acer Predator 4k2k XB321HK 32" 3840x2160 16:9 IPS G-Sync Monitor

Now I do not understand graphics at all, my ageing brain is too old to take in all the details, so can anyone please advise me on the correct settings for ED?
I'm currently on in-game resolution of 3840x2160 and Ultra quality settings, visual look is good &I can read the message text (lower game res made this difficult). However I'm getting problems with EDOdyssey Materials Helper (which worked fine on my old PC):
ASUS Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard ATX
i7-6700K @4gHz
Samsung SM951 256Gb SSD MZ-HPV2560
48 (2x8 + 2x16) Gb RAM Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2666MHz
MSI NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX1080 GamingX 8GB GPU
EVGA SuperNova 80Wattplus Bronze 750W PSU
Windows10 Home

On occasions when running EDOMH I get some audible beeps and a black screen. ALT+ESC shows both game and EDOMH windows still working. Yesterday the machine had a hiccup and went to a small window (still high res) on the display, but when I stopped ED the display refilled the whole monitor screen.

So I'm wondering if I have a graphics issue...

Thanks I'll have a watch when I have time. But that video doesnt appear to have been updated in 4 years, despite an Odyssey update being promised.

Ive had a short discussion with Jixxed, waiting for more info, but the later behaviour makes me think its a fundamental graphics issue rather than with EDOMH.

At the moment yes, and I had another black screen instance this afternoon. Immediate ALT+TAB showed both the game screen and EDOMH at the same time, so I'm leaning towards a graphics or Windows11 problem. Next time it happens I'll make a note of the time and see if I can see anything relevant in the Event Viewer. I did check this afternoon and saw an error (though I think the time meant it wasnt relevant) relating to Windows GameBar, which I deleted last week...

Have you stress tested the new system to make sure the hardware is working correctly and doesn't have any obvious configuration issues?

What was the exact error you saw in the event log?

Can't remember, I'll have to check tomorrow (but I dont think the time matched up with the black screen issue).
How do you stress test a PC?

How do you stress test a PC?

A simple question with a complex answer. In your situation, I'd try to rule out any obvious system memory and GPU instability.

I'd start with y-cruncher and using it's 'component stress tester' option, run the full set of default tests for at least a few hours. This should find most issues with the CPU and memory subsystems.

Good, free GPU tests are harder to find. Many of the synthetic tests out there, while great for identifying thermal issues, will miss the sort of problems that real games can have. The Basic edition of 3DMark has three tests, which can't be automatically looped, but are worth running. Unigine Superposition isn't particularly demanding anymore, but it works fairly well with RDNA3 (the architecture your 7800XT uses) and can be left to loop. I'd recommend the 4k optimized preset.

You can also run CPU/memory and GPU tests simultaneously, if you limit the number of threads and memory of the former so as to not completely choke the latter.

I'd also recommend HWiNFO for monitoring temperatures and other information.

Anyway, the problem you describe could be a hardware issue, a driver issue, or a problem with how Windows 11 handles certain overlays. I just think it prudent to rule out flaky hardware first.

Thanks, I might try some of that. But I'm not suspicious of the hardware. I've had the PC running for a couple of weeks now & this is the only problem I've seen & it only seems to occur with ED and EDOMH, so I suspect a driver or Windows11 issue is more likely. When I run these two I also usually have running Joystick Gremlin, OpenTrack, EDDiscovery & often also Firefox...the problem seems to be with some interaction only between ED & EDOMH, so my first thought was the graphics overlay of EDOMH notifications.

I like EDOMH, being able to set up a wishlist for various engineer unlocks, suit & weapon upgrades- etc, then monitor materials against it. It has an augmented reality overlay to indicate whether mats are wishlist, useles, powerplay etc. It worked fine for me under win10...
I gave up today on trying to validate the game files, it was just reloading them very slowly which seemed pointless with Wednesday's upcoming update. So I ran debloat tool to get rid of GameBar, then played my Steam version & without EDOMH running- no problems. Will try again tomorrow with EDOMH to see if thats the cause of my problem. But still dont know what graphics settings I should have.

But still dont know what graphics settings I should have.
For what it's worth, I'm running a very similar gpu to yourself (rx 6800) across three 2k monitors (about 7500 x 1440) at ultra settings and I'm getting about 45fps around space stations. I'm not bothered about on foot combat; I think that would stress my old potato system. I'm running an old Mac Pro, dual 6 core X5680 @3.33 Ghz with 48Gb of ram. The 16gb RX 6800 seems to cope admirably with my fairly stressful graphics setting, so you should be fine. I've got most of my setting set to Ultra as well. On top of that, the system runs very quietly; much more so than when I had an RX580 in my rig.

Tlds; only way to find out is to try some settings for yourself :)

Cheers,

Razzerman

i think that be a question to ask who makes the EDOMH app
maybe pm jixxed
(could be a problem with running full screen vs borderless)

this may help config ed

@STRONTIUM DOG Many many thanks for that video reference! Finally something that makes sense to me of graphics settings...I foresee some experimentation in the near future!

@Garix I checked but my monitor doesnt support HFR & it's turned off.

I played via Steam yesterday & for the first time I got a message that Adrenaline was upscaling 1040 to 2169 resolution. Odd.

Now I tried windowed mode yesterday (EDOMH apparently wants either borderless or windowed to work. Guess it's to do with the augmented reality overlay, which is I think the problem Im getting) but the game screen was miniature...the advice I found googling was to switch to fullscreen which was a lovely appearance but or course EDOMH augmented reality didnt then work. So how do I get the game window to fill the monitor screen without going to fullscreen game mode? (I did say that I dont understand computer graphics!)

Edit
ah solved, make the game resolution the same as the native screen resolution and running OK in windowed mode...now for lunch (copawlot is eyeing my ankle, Im getting nervous) and then try EDOMH

it works for me the settlements introduced with the odd have wierd fps caps so you would not want to be tweaking for those mid game then tweaking back
for poss minor gains

Well, Ive successfully managed to download data from a crashed satellites whilst running EDOMH & no black screen, so that may have been solved with Windowed mode!
