Fiction Recommened novel to start with?

Been playing the PB a fair bit, am a heavy Sci-Fi reader and want to get stuck into some Elite fiction to give me some back story and the lore of the Elite galaxy.

Any suggestions on which order to read the novels in and where to start?

(I have a kindle and believe they are all available on that).

Thanks.

I second that question. I would like to buy a novel/audio book as well, but not sure where to start.

There is a sticky in this section - Elite Chronology - which shows how all the books fit in the timeline - might help you decide.

Hmmm. Tricky to offer advice here.

I think the anthology will give you the biggest variety of stories in the Elite universe - though they are set over different time periods. Some will give you history, others will give you insights into the day to day life of traders, fighters and pirates, others will give you background lore.

Mostly Harmless is funny, hitchhiker-esque, but will give you that "lone individual against the universe" story which is common to Elite.

Lave Revolution centres (mostly) around a single planet famous in the old Elite Lore, but is less directly relevant to game play in ED itself as it's set in 3265.

And here the Wheel goes all over the universe, so that may be some use.

My book (Reclamation) is set on the edges of civilised space and mostly concerns the Imperial faction and the events around a minor war/skirmish with the Federation.

The Amazon reviews of the books may also help you decide > http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=elite+dangerous

There are also the Gollancz novels. I haven't read them yet, so can't comment directly.

Cheers,

Drew.

Ah ok thanks, dunno why I didn't see that first time I looked.

Thanks for the info drew. Think I'll start with the "Tales from the Frontier" to get me started and go from there. Expect I'll read them all at some point anyways :)

I started reading Tales from the Frontier yesterday.

I'm running a big-ish site focusing on stories, fanfiction and the likes, and thus I get to read a lot of really bad, and some really really fantastic stuff. My experience with tie-in books for games has been disappointing most of the time.

I still remember the booklet that came with First Encounters, a game which I completely overlooked when it came out due to non-existent advertisement, and when I saw screenshots I had to have this game, even though it was already a few years old. And the booklet that came with it, well... Let's just say I still remember three of the stories in complete detail. They were that good.

Do the new books hold up to that standard? Well I can't say for all the books, and opinions on "Mostly Harmless" seem to be rather mixed. As for what I've read of "Tales" however, yes, this is both relevant to Elite Dangerous AND really solid SciFi. It's not cringeworthy like so many tie-in books.

Soooo yeah. If you are on the fence like I was yesterday, the people writing good things about Tales from the Frontier are right. It's a solid read and if you are a fan of the game you'll enjoy it even more, but that's not required to be able to appreciate.

Thanks! Fancy leaving us a review on Amazon? :)

To the OP, somewhat self-serving but I do recommend Tales from the Frontier - the variety of stories really does reflect the nature of Elite very well. Blaze your own trail, and whatnot.

Elite: Revolution also makes a very good starting point, since it deals with the cold war between the Empire and the Federation, probably the biggest storyline of the whole game.

Elite: Revolution - what's that then? Did I miss something?
