test a megaship at rhea, to see if can get a hack data terminal ( something produce it was called).scan it with data scan twice.and went up to the hack terminal 300m away (release the recon collector) and was told that it wasn't the right collector.?
i tryed 3 diffrent collects

*mining collector
*repair collector
none of these worked.
I think you call all limpets "collectors" which is a bit confusing.
There is only one type of limpet and their job is determined by the controller that you use to launch them.
Collector is one of them - a limpet launched by collector controller will bring back all collectible things in its range or, if you launch it when you have something targeted, it will collect that thing and then self-destruct.
Other types of limpet controllers are prospector (can inspect asteroids for minerals), Decontamination (counteracts caustic damage), Fuel transfer (transfers 1t of fuel from you to the target), Repair (repairs the targeted ship), Research (can probe aliens and bring back samples), Hatch Breaker (breaks into targeted ship's cargo hold) and Recon (can hack data points).
That's the one you need - The Recon one. I suspect that you either didn't have the data point targeted (I haven't done this in a while, but I think you have to target the point first and THEN release the Recon limpet) or you equipped Research controller by accident instead.
