I think this would be handy. Say you have a 4 Slot compartment. You want to run a one slot pieces of equipment such as normal scanner and Detailed surface scanner. Why not allow the internal compartment to be reconfigured at the star ports for a price to allow Two 1 slot compartments and a 2 slot one out of the 4. That way you could have the two scanners and some cargo space.(I really hope this is making sense) otherwise I feel it is just wasting space.

Or perhaps a reward from high factions from feds/empire, units that can combine into those slots (so can be prepped/tested in advance and we don't end up with overpowered things). A combined scanner/detailed surface scanner unit that fits in a slot2 would be an awesome reward to aim for max faction.

good idea, although nothing will happen until mid-way into 2015 if at all, as the devs are mighty busy with the release, then the patches, then the gameplay fixes, then the ship releases, then more patches, then game balance fixes etc. etc.
So just throw that idea onto the pile of all the other great ideas generated by the forum and hope for the best
