Recording Videos on PS4

Some questions about recording videos using PS4:

  1. Can videos be recorded to an external USB drive?
  2. Once recorded, can videos be uploaded directly to YouTube from PS4?
  3. What is the resolution of videos recorded on PS4?
  4. Is there any performance hit while recording videos on PS4?

I created a YouTube channel just so I could join Ed Lewis and his crew in chat during their livestreams, but now that I have it, I might upload some videos from time-to-time. I don't have the bandwidth to broadcast a livestream, so any videos I do definitely need to be "record now, upload later."

Don't know exactly how to capture gameplay etc but you can certainly upload direct to YouTube, Twitter, Facebook etc - that's what the Share button is for.

You can apparently copy video clips created with the "share" feature to USB devices, but I'm not sure about how long those clips can be.

There's always the possibility of getting an HDMI recorder and save stuff on a more versatile device (a.k.a. "real computer" ;) )

Ducky,

1. Not one percent sure. They might be able to be moved. I think they record directly to the internal drive by default.
2. Yes, I've done this quite a lot. Need to verify your YouTube account if you want longer than 15 mins but it's a painless process. (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/71673?hl=en)
3. 720p on PS4. 1080p on PS4 Pro.
4. Nope, not that I have noticed as my PS4 is set to record by default. Good for capturing interesting events and such without having to plan it.

Hope this helps.

1.not sure on that. I stuck a 2tb drive in mine when bought it so no external needed. yet. just guessing, I would say no to direct recording, but I'd hope you could transfer them.

2. Yes

3. 720p on base ps4, upto 1080p on Pro

4. Never noticed any, it's always running in background. You can also just start a recording manually, but the video editor is real easy to use for trimming anyway.

Thanks everyone! One more question - what's the file format / codec? I'm assuming it's using something efficient like MPEG-4. As I said earlier, my upload bandwidth is limited.

ps - that stormy is a ninja, if not Ra's al Ghul himself!

Not actually sure. I've found the manual which mentions you can move clips to an external drive.

The manual predates the PS4 update that lets users store games on an external drive, which is why I wonder if perhaps videos can also be recorded directly to external drives as well (post-update). I may have enough local drive storage for it not to matter. If I do videos, I hope to keep them relatively short. I'm not a fan of unedited videos with 20 minutes of menu-clicking.

I'll play around with video recording myself using some other game, NMS perhaps. I have one month and one day to figure it out :D

I record console footage with an Elgato HD60 Pro card in my pc, just run the hdmi from the console to the card in and another from the card out to the TV.
It's zero latency pasthrough and can record in any format, or stream to the major services. tho i cant stream due to a slow internet :/
granted it's a £120-150 card so probably not for the casual player.

As others have answered your questions, i thought i would throw in some of the other options ps4 has regarding video recording

Not sure about recording straight to usb...but since last update you can download/transfer game data/saves to usb HDD ( use new hdd/sdd because it will format said hdd for this) , that will free up hdd space on console for vids if straight to usb is not a thing. Im fairly positive you can transfer it to usb afterwards.

Recording has two ways.....ps4 is always recording previous 15min gameplay. Tap share button save vid or you can start recording manually.

Link youtube account and upload directly from ps4.

Ps4 all so has its own editing studio with basic cuts , moving clips around, various screen wipes, text and pics ect.

Thank you, this is very informative. I had no idea PS4 is always recording... Is that a setting that can be toggled on and off?

This editing software, where do I find that? I thought I knew everything about my PS4, except the social media stuff (this forum is my only social media), but I guess not. Fascinating! I'll definitely have to dig in and play with all this extra stuff.

Last 15 minutes... That means it should have my very awesome last round on Overwatch. Heroes never die!!

Have a PS4 Pro and this can bet set to 60 minutes of gameplay recording - not sure I would say it's 'automatic' certainly I have found you need to select when to start - it will then run for 60 minuted before stopping automatically or you can stop it at any time using the share button.

When u hit the share button you get a choice of screenshot or video, if you chose video it saves the last thirty minutes you've pld :)

Export
Yup
720
Nope

If your wanting to be a utuber you'll need more gear tbh, not sure but I think the ability to record headset chat was added at some point. The ps4 always records gameplay similar to a sky/cable box unless you're using remote play

So now I have a technical question. Since the PS4 is basically in constant DVR mode, is this last 15 minutes of video being cached to the hard drive or a RAM cache dedicated for this purpose? I ask because someday I want to upgrade my PS4 internal drive to an SSD, but writing to an SSD constantly shortens its lifespan.

ps - I actually tried to find the answer the old fashioned way (Google), but I haven't had any luck yet.

pps - I have no delusions of being the next ObsidianAnt. Now I might film a goat flying a 'conda, which should go viral and make me rich, but I won't need top-end gear for that.

Where is this setting mate? Looked today and I couldn't find it. I can manually start a recording with the share button, but that's often too late!

Yes, where is this setting, and can I turn it off completely? I normally do NOT want video streaming to my hard drive.

Share button > Sharing and Broadcast Settings > Video Clip Settings > Length of Video Clip

Don't think you can turn it off. 30 seconds is the shortest.
