My suggestion is to be able to use the recruitable copilots to fly your owned ships beside you in a wing.
Of course we would need to be able to have tactics we can assign them ie. try to run when under X amount of shield health or hull health.
To balance things I suggest:
1. If their ship is destroyed you pay 50% insurance.
2. Jumprange is limited to the lowest jumprange of the group.
3. If their ship is destroyed you have a chance of losing the pilot.
