Here are a few talking points that I want to go over with the release of the red deer:

• What are your overall opinions on the design and animation quality?
• Do you think that there were some better options for the anniversary animal? I can think of a few: Tasmanian devil, red river hog, black rhino, wolverine, walrus, and so on.
• Is there anything else for the anniversary that you would have liked to see . . . other than an updated Malayan tapir?

All of those animals are way too highly requested to be just gifted away as a free animal ( except maybe the black rhino) so i don't think they were even realistic options for an aniversary animal.

I was expecting something like the american flamingo or ABB, or even another lemur so i'm happy we got the deer for free. It feels right as a base game animal and it won't be stealing any slots in future DLCs.

And i think it looks fantastic.

It looks incredible. I haven't gotten to play with it yet myself, but it looks like another slam dunk by Frontier based on the pictures and footage I've seen.

Better options is a really subjective one. Honestly, I'm genuinely amazed that we got a relatively requested animal that isn't based on a base game species. Even with that in mind, I definitely think most of the ones you listed are way too marketable to be given away for free, though.

Personally, though, I can't imagine I'll ever really use the red deer. I'm genuinely glad for those who will, but it simply doesn't have a place in realistic American zoo rosters. Even keeping options limited to base game "clones", I still would've preferred an American flamingo, Grevy's zebra, Masai giraffe, another lemur, or any of our missing bears. If we extend our options to include a less cloney species based on DLC species, I'd have taken a monkey any day of the week. Any monkey.

This was honestly so much more than I was expecting, though. I'm thrilled that we've gotten anything at all.

I haven't played with the red deer yet (not sure I ever will, if I'm being honest) but it looks fantastic. On a personal level, I had exactly zero interest in it though and I never cared that there was associated scenery in the game beforehand. I would have preferred another clone animal, specifically the Sumatran tiger above all else.

I am very happy with the Red Deer models and animations. I have seen some very funny grazing animations where the deer chew the grass and I dont know if its new, but it feel a bit improved over the Fallow Deer. It also has really cute ear movements.

The animal that I hoped for was an American Flamingo, I really want those birds, but they are maybe too simple of a reskin for a DLC, so I hoped we could get them, as they represent two very underrepresented groups - birds and SA animals. In the end, it really comes to a personal preference, some will say we have enough deer, some will say one flamingo is enough, etc. I am very happy for the deer, it is not really a typical zoo animal, but it is perfect for a small EU park that focus on local wildlife or even rehabilitation facilities in EU, good to have the option.

I dont think it is reasonable to expect or even want something like a Tasmanian Devil for free. It would require alot of new animations, maybe even adjusted rig and it is a very popular animal, making it a very likely candidate for an animal that can easily carry a DLC.

Do I think there were better options? No way. I'm super thrilled with the red deer!

The design is fantastic, it looks really great in game. The animations are also really nice and cute, the way they rub their heads together. The fawn looks lovely! I'll be honest and say I like the design of the red deer far more than the fallow deer--but this is probably because in real life I think red deer are prettier.

I had no expectations for the anniversary, so I was mega hyped when the red deer was suddenly shown!

König? They used to, but in recent months they said they were kinda tired with the red deer and were in favor of the Pere David instead (said with love, King of Coffee )

Also for the topic lf the thread, its pretty awesome?
Like, we expected nothing, speculated a reskin of a base game animal and got a what seems like quite new medium to high requested animal with a taxa unique to the dlcs that would struggle to fit into future packs after it missed its shot with the europe pack.
So yeah, i also would have completly adored a monkey, but we are objectivly living in the best time line right now and i really hope nobody sees the red deer and throws a hissy fit about it.
I know its "just a deer" but i really do believe that the only animals that could have been on Par with it as a gift would have been the black rhino, greater rhea and ABB, with the only better option being a monkey, which is the highest praise i can give to anything at this point.
So yeah, they havent just overdone themself, they hit a tripple home rum into a knock out punch that true comboed into a deserved highscore on the amazing tier list.

It's weird to describe, but I feel really content with the animals in game now.

The only thing that would truly make it complete for me is a wallaby.

And all the other animals added will be super nice. But right now, I can build everything I want in game. Would I love more European animals? Yes. The wild boar and wisent. But right now I can also make a good European zoo section. In contrast, if the wild boar and wisent were added but not the red deer? The game would still feel incomplete to me.
I'm just so happy man.

Also I apologize to those wanting a red deer in Franchise this afternoon. I bred them and made a ton of credits selling them to a dried-out market. People were throwing money at me and now I finally feel rich.

Its less that i grew tired if the red deer itself, more that i got tired of discussing it.
Its not only annoying to defend all the time, because europe cant have nice stuff and any slot that goes to europe is a wasted slot apparently (not calling out anyone in particular but you all know its true, saying positive stuff about more europe was allways an uphill battle in these forums) but also after discussing and defending it a bunch i got bored.
Its not fun to allways present the same idear to mixed feedback + i reevaluated my stance to the big picture of pz and many animals.
I love the red deer, but is it fair or even sensible that europe has all the deers and every other place has to hope that a deer from europe also lives there, right?
Primarly the perres david deer (ngl in part nutrits fault) and white tailed deer (gotta thank darthquell and biggest dreamer for that) grew in my favor as animals that i like less then the red deer, but that would add more to the game then the red deer, most importanrly a chinese and a american common zoo deer.
So while im very happy about the red deer now, im also glad that that means more hope for those two and a muntjac and/or pudu to make it in the game, just to spread out the deers a bit more.

Yep, if we get another deer at this point, it has to be that one. Anything else would be a disappointment, and I say that as one of these forums' biggest white-tailed deer cheerleaders. The white-tailed deer already existed in the holistic cross section of the reindeer and fallow deer, and was yet another mundane North American species to boot, but I still sort of wanted it. At this point I think we're set enough on deer to deprioritize everything that isn't truly exceptional. For me that's Pere David's, but you can also easily justify a smaller species (muntjac, etc.)

So rarely it happens that species that I want are added to the game that if one day Père David’s deer would find it’s way here I would be just extatic one over the moon

I'm totally cool with the deer. Actually, when I first saw the post, I opened it and saw the deer and was confused for a moment. I was all: "huh? Whah?"
Then I thought it was a whitetail deer and was all: "ooh, yay. Konig is gonna kill me"

Then I saw red deer and was all: "oh wow, exciting"

I think it's the perfect animal, as it matches an in-game scenery piece, gives base game Europe a 3rd habitat animal (if you included the timber wolf and the flamingo), and also gives the base game a deer to begin with.

Plus, it's something most got excited for, me included. Now if we had gotten the gray fox, I'd be the only one cheering while the PZ community throws pitchforks at me

The quality is super. There is really no reason to say something against its inclusion. It is a very iconic species which even was quite popular within the meta wishlist. Honestly, in my opinion it was the best we could get (black rhino would perhaps be a similar case). It is not at the same rate a clone animal than the Lemur (if you would even call it a clone) and it based of a DLC animal. Expections getting highly requested animals among the top 20 like the Tasmanian Devil, Red River Hog, Walrus or Wolverine are/were just unrealistic. The same stands for the expections of some people to get a new walkthrough exhibit animal. It was a Brand new feature. It is bad in a financial way for Frontier to give away for free such an animal so shortly after DLC release. So all in all I am more than happy with the Red Deer. I think it was among the best picks we could get. In the end I would have taken every free animal without any criticism (even if it would have been a third tiger, brown bear or Wolf subspecies which we really do not need as DLC animals (my opinion)).

I really like the model as I’ve seen several videos of them. I haven’t nor will I have a chance to play till tomorrow tho. I would have been happy with a Sumatran tiger, flamingo, giraffe, zebra, ect. Basic edited reskins. I’m more then happy to receive a prop animal tho but out of the black rhino and dromedary the deer ranks third for me. Now’s as good of a time to get it as any tho and I’m extremely greatfull and very excited to get it! Free at that!
