I don't know if someone already tested, but taking of the frame with the sponge, and putting on the RIFT, the Rays a waaaay shorter.
Only issue that people with glasses won't manage to test and in long period you will start bleeding

So you took off the foam so you could get the lenses closer to your eyes - this helps clarity and fov with the Vive too, not sure about the rays however.

But yes you can't wear it that way, though if you go cut some of your own thinner foam you might get by.
