At the moment, many aspects of the game rely on accessing out-of-game resources such as forums, chat channels etc.
Like many others, I role-play my character, so I take the view that I can only do in game what my character knows to do. So apart from things that I discover myself, the only source of information in the wider galaxy is through Galnet. Unless the location of alien ruins, Thargoid bases or generation ships is covered in Galnet, then my character isn't going to ever know about them and I, as a role playing gamer, will never see any of these things.
As it currently works, Galnet suffers from having a lot of data that isn't particularly useful or interesting (basically all those which pertain to PowerPlay; does anyone actually read or care about expansion reports?) and while some of the above major discoveries are covered, I would propose that a priority is put on making sure that important discoveries and events are always clearly put on Galnet so that players can follow the trail to experience the content in game without having to resort to using out-of-game methods.
Which leads on to the other suggestion: Make Galnet a lot better. Introduce channels that separate the stats and reports from the important headlines, use it as the way to bring the galaxy to life and give it character. Include pictures, audio or video to reduce the walls of text. Perhaps have "premium subscription" channels that require you to have a certain rank or status to unlock. Even consider bringing back factional reporting as previously seen in FFE.
The potential of Galnet is huge, it just needs to be fleshed out into something brilliant. Something for the post 2.4 release?
Thoughts?
