Reference stars for coordinates?

What are some good stars to use as reference distances for coordinate calculation?

Currently a noob explorer, heading towards the core. (First stop: NGC 6357)

I'm looking for some short-name stars that I can punch into the star map for any system that EDSC doesn't have coords for.

Type in "SAGIT" and the map will take you to Sagittarius A*, easy way of knowing how far the core is.

When you look at the map there are reference grid numbers on the grid. The last number is LY away from Sol, for example:

16,610 LY away from Sol.

So you don't really need a system name to track your distance from the bubble.

I'm currently trying to figure out the "Holy Grail" of reference stars. I'm out the far edge of the galaxy, and often even 25 stars is not enough. The worst part, actually, is that you don't realise it's not enough until after you've pressed send...
