Refinery required?

So I can't scoop up shards from asteroids and store them in my cargo-hold because only a refinery can contain them? Wow ...well done there

Yup. The refinery processes the ore from the shards. Once the processed ore reaches 1 ton, it's converted into a cargo canister. The raw rocks do not go into your cargo space.

Better grade refineries can hold more raw ore of varying types. Each bin in the refinery processes one type of ore, which can be selected by the user.

Professor Google can give you a bit more detailed information, if you ask.

I admit some parts of the game are not covered by the manual, but this part is. There's a link on the launcher. It is updated as well. They do a good job there with that.

Pg100
The life of a miner can be dangerous and even frustrating as they search for the “motherlode”. It is also has a reasonably expensive entry barrier; your ship will need to be fitted with both a mining laser and a refinery module.

Nobody read manuals anymore...

What would you do with those rocks? until they are refined they are practically worthless. You really must be getting desperate and dragging the bottom of the barrel to find things to complain about.

found gold and wanted to scoop it up and then get a refinery...

Another artificial rule, no matter if it's in the manual...

Did you read what I wrote?
Not an artificial rule.

Your ship don't have the means to hold it.
It's extremely dangerous transporting tons of loose rock in a spaceship going at speed of light.

I wonder how you imagine all the various metal deposits get processed into metals then? The shards you mine are not pure metal, they are lumps of rock with either metal ores or fragments of pure metals. In either case they need to be refined to be turned into usable commodities.

EDIT:

The problem is this though. If you need to refine say 5 units of ore to get one unit of cargo, how do you measure them for storage? Are we assuming all fragments are the same size ie 1 cargo unit? Seems a little odd, I mean surely these fragments are going to be different sizes of rock?

However, this 'could' be another gameplay element that could add more to the game. Being able to store fragments as raw ore, sellable as ore. a lot lot less that pure metals etc You'd have potentially more cargo space to hold more fragments.

This would allow pilots to mine without losing a module for a refinery. The emergent gameplay from this ie mining in teams etc could be interesting. A pirate could come along as steal a hold full of fragments, refine them themselves and make a packet (but they've got a refinery

I can see your logic, that a ship should be able to put raw rocks in its cargo and not have to refine it on the spot.

My post about the manual was meant to help - seriously didn't mean to condescend because to be honest, I didn't know either until I just looked it up lol - I never mined.

I think the point is that mining sucks. and he isnt wrong. total waist of time! he would make better mony trying to pirate player vipers

yes i know that, thank you. It still doesn't make sense. Don't try to convince me that this actually makes any sense. It's just another artificial rules made up by FD in lack of any better ideas.

This actually means you can't have friends (or even wings) to help you with mining cause they all need refineries just to be able to transport the stuff... And as a pirate you are not able to scoop shards before the actual miner does it, unless your pirate vessel contains a refinery....lol

mucho estupido

Instead of going bat guano crazy, did you consider posting in suggestions forum, asking FD to consider rock cargo containers modules, instead of regular cargo racks?
You went straight to the negative.

Mining in ED is slow, tedious and with low reward - but the idea that a ship needs specialist mining equipment fitted before being able to mine does not seem unreasonable.

Actually, you might be able to have a wing do it with just one ship having a refinery. Is it possible to use a mining laser without the refinery installed? If it is, everyone equips a laser to pewpew the 'roid, and the guy with the biggest ship pops in a refinery (or three or whatever) to process the ore. Then when you're done, everyone bails to a safe location (SC to a random place and drop out together) where the guy with the processed ore drops cargo for everyone to scoop up.

That's just speculation tho Han, I've never tried mining, so I don't know if it's possible to use the mining laser sans refinery. If it does work that could be interesting... three guys with combat loadouts and a mining laser, protecting a freighter with refineries, splitting the proceeds afterward.

I edited my post almost immediately - oddly enough saying what you are. It's clear you are passionate about the game, or you wouldn't have posted, or feel annoyed. However your posts did come over a tad erm.. 'grumpy' :D Time for a coffee perhaps? :p

The only way I think you could have other scoop it up is once you have one ton. Eject it so another player can pick it up. That if you have the refinery and such.
