Refining mining

Once I'm at a decent pristine mining location, is there any best practice for choosing which rock to mine?

Is there anything i can do to increase productivity and speed in finding valuable resources?

It just feels a bit random at the moment and as if the server is just dishing out numbers at me regardless of what I do...

I pop off a couple of chunks, then see what they contain on the contacts tab

Anecdotally, most painite is discovered near your arrival point. Not a rule, just an observation

Don't bother with anything but the best metals and minerals (Painite, Platinum). Maybe gold and silver if they're abundant. As Dommarraa said, shoot the rock a few seconds and check what sort of chunk it spits out. If it contains useless stuff, move on. A big refinery helps since there is no way to tell drones not to pick up the worthless chunks. More refinery slots means less clicking and sorting for you.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm doing most of that stuff.

I guess I was wondering if there is any way to differentiate between rocks by sight, and de-randomise the process?

All we have is the difference by sight in rocks vs metal roids.

Not true for me. I suspect different parts of the rings give different yields but I have no hard evidence (there's no way I'm going to start logging stats on this).
