It may come as a disapointment to learn that you can set your graphic card to its lowest setting and then look for the areas of distortion on screen which indicate something is there. This makes spotting tiny things much easier and is definitely how many surface features were found.
Its also why I never found anything prior to the new scanners.
Regarding finding things in the glalaxy I once logged out somewhere in the black and when I logged back in again these were showing up in my Nav panel. They definitely weren't there when I logged out.
