Reflections of a Video Game Maker - Gabe Newell

I watched this talk of Gabe's yesterday. Some game/behaviour mechanics get discussed, amongst business/economics/stuff. He reflects on how he tried to "uninhibit" creativity by decisions that are counter to accepted norms - with many anecdotes. This rings loudly with DB/FD's choice of kickstarter and the reasons we are participating in this forum.

Also FWIW I recommend looking at the Valve Employee Handbook - there is a pdf copy out there: http://newcdn.flamehaus.com/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf

Anyway, perhaps two things some various folks may find interesting if they want to be involved in a game's design decisions - hence I'm posting this here :)

Thanks. Hopefully I'll have time to watch/read tonight, and will have some thoughts to post. A list of good sources of info on game design would be much appreciated by me. I trawled through every episode of Extra Credits recently, and that had some insightful stuff in it. Perhaps we could have threads every so often relating to a general design concept, perhaps with a couple of materials such as presented here.

Given that it's not related to the game, but more about game design in general, I think this is the correct place for the thread. Otherwise, there is a separate part of the forum - not specific to E:D - to discuss game design. I personally don't go there often though, hence wanting to see this in here.
