Refusing to pay a fine

I was trading between two systems, one was in civil war and apparently the commodity I was trading became illegal at the wars end. I got scanned and fined 2mil. I didn't pay it and just found a different route. What will happen if I don't ever pay? I have no interests in the system that issued it.

If you don;t pay it, you will become wanted in that system after a week. Someone else may have comment on what happens over a longer stretch of time, as I am not exactly sure how things work now.

I almost never pay my fines because I tend to forget them. It had consequences for me maybe once or twice and I play a lot.

If you don't pay you become wanted for a week. If you go by without reoffending, it becomes a dormant bounty for a week. If you go by another week without reoffending it becomes a legacy fine permanently. Legacy fines exist until:
- You pay it off yourself, or;
- You die and respawn in a station owned by that faction. The legacy fine will come out of your rebuy bill in that station.

This bit me once where the rebuy + fine was more than the cost of buying the ship new from scratch (fine =~ 17m, Asp worth 14m), so I just respawned in a sidey and went on.
