General Gameplay Regarding "Era" Limitations

Alright so, Lets get this out of the way first. Surface level, this update was pretty damn fantastic. Finally let us play what we wanted to play, which is Jurassic Park. I can probably count the people who wanted Jurassic World themes on my fingers but we know why it had to be done. The skins are fantastic, the compys are adorable, the Pteranodons are great, even if kinda limited, it will do until the sequel i suppose.

However, I have one huge complaint I have to level. I'm having trouble even parsing how to present this because its so damn layered. But lets just say what my issue is in it's simplest.

When playing Challenge mode in JP Era, I am limited to the JP only dinosaurs. While this makes sense in the campaign, It makes less, albeit some, sense in Challenge. Now, I hear all ye milksops say "Why dont you play Sandbox then, all dinosaurs are available in Sandbox regardless of Era, apparently". My answer to you is I bloody HATE Sandbox. I dont feel like I'm achieving anything, It feels like im playing with cheats like back when i was a dumb kid, ruining my own experience with a game. Even turning on the Hammond foundation fee just doesnt do it for me. Hell, all Dino DNA and Research is completed in Sandbox so Im literally struggling to achieve nothing. Challenge is the true playthrough experience for me in this game, but I am now forbidden to use dinosaurs I've paid for, in an Era I've paid for, in a game I've paid for, that's all about building your dream Jurassic (Park) World with all the tools at your disposal.

Similarly, I'm somewhat miffed about things like Botany not being in JP Era even though we very much know they were and the original mechanic was inspired by things mentioned in the original JP. Also a bit annoyed that we lose things like the viewing platform and tower, I see no real reason we should outside of the campaign. I can stomach that a bit more given how good the tour gets with binoculars but is still limiting and the absence of so many things, large and small kindof cheapens the whole thing.

But really, to get back on point. The game has now become virtually unplayable for me. I do -not- enjoy Sandbox in the least and never will. I only play campaign for the unlocks. I do pretty much exclusively Challenge. And now, I want to play in JP Era because of the great new buildings and fences and all the mostly good changes, but if I do that, I am massively limited in my choice of dinosaurs, which once again, I've paid money for. I own every piece of DLC for this game and now i feel like I'm being shown a big ole middle finger.

Please Frontier, If nothing else, just remove the dinosaur limitations from Challenge mode, I beg you. I don't want to play JW Era because it's not just about the dino skins. JP Era allows so much more diverse replayability just by the simple act of letting you place down your own entrance, where JW Era always forces you to start from the same bloody location. Then theres the fact that the whole decoration, or "Signs" tab just doesnt at all feature in JW Era, and smaller things like, god, even the fences are so much better.

If you manage to get a JP skin for the viewing tower and platform, and even the greenhouse so we can have a mechanic (which again, we paid for) back, that would be icing on the cake, but the above is just killing me.

They did mention in the patch notes they removed the fun rating and travel rating for JP era. Balance stuff. But i get your point. i wanna use the gene modifications from Dr. Wu's dlc and the greenhouse from claire's dlc but can't. Which is a game changer in actuality. So it sucks. Hmmm

Yeah, the "Era appropriate" limitations on dinosaur species in Challenge mode is the exact opposite of what I was hoping for. When I saw that in the patch notes, I expected that to refer to the hybrids - not to, y'know, most of the game's species.

I think it's important to note that in the first movie (Jurassic Park) Elie Sattler even refers to a species of plant that has been extinct since the Cretacious. That alone is reason enough for Paleo Botany to be part of the JP era.

I know and agree - the paleobotany in-game is nowhere as sophisticated as cloning paleo flora, and if they could do that in 1993, why not-ingame?
I feel the excuse is that they can't think of a 1993 design for the greenhouse, but it is almost too absurd to be true.

I could not agree more. I do not understand how Sandbox mode does not allow for mix era buildings, let alone skins. Why are skins not even an option? Why would I NOT want JP Era Velociraptor skins (specifically JP3) on my JW style park? That's absolutely ridiculous, I want to use those skins!

Like many others in this forum, I've paid for every DLC, and I've put hundreds of hours into this game. Sandbox should not be restricting, especially when it comes to skins. I know the developers work hard on this game and have made many adjustments in the last (almost) two years, but this is unacceptable. It truly is and I'm livid.

This is what I posted on another thread:

What they mean by being “unable to mix both eras”, they mean you can’t mix the structures (that means operation buildings, guest buildings, signs, power and enclosure structures) from both the JW and JP eras together (the aviary is an exception), but everything else like the two new “dinos” and the legacy skins you will.

Some technology is incompatible.

The aviary makes no sense; there is a JW aviary. Why didn't they use that?

I guess they just wanted to find a way to have the Pteranodons from the JP DLC in your JW parks, and those designs were all they had and made ready at the time, since the DLC is exclusively JP trilogy saga focused, and the JW styles wouldn’t make sense in the most basic right perspective.

If you’d like, you can check this out I made yesterday:

So you can use the JP (93, 97, 01) era skins in JW Era sandbox? I was fairly sure they stated that they will be restricted to JP Era Sandbox

The whole limitation of species genuinely ruins any desire for me to return to the Jurassic Park theme once the campaign is done. I much prefer the building style and general atmosphere of the era over Jurassic World and was confused as to why dinosaurs I paid for wouldn't be able to be used for some arbitrary reason. This isn't even a matter of dinosaurs being available only if they were discovered at the time of the original Jurassic Park as dinosaurs such as Homalocephale and Camarasaurus being left in the dust despite being discovered in 1974 and 1877 respectively! I sincerely hope that this restriction is eventually patched out otherwise I have to consider refunding a purchase I was originally extremely excited for.

Yeah this isnt about the skins at all, Its about all the functionality being locked away from the player more or less arbitrarily, more specifically, the ability to acquire around only a third of the total dinosaur roster or so in JP Era Challenge mode.

My thoughts exactly
