Regarding the Sidewinder, Cobra and other Triangle ships

Why do they look like they are the front of something?

Almost as if there was more ship, and they are the front section that detached off a larger vessel.

Think like the saucer seperationof the Enterprise D, the back feels like it should attach to something.

anyone else think so?

In some ways that makes sense though, doesn't it? (or at least, you can rationalize it in a way)

If you wanted to make a smaller version of a bigger ship, while also preserving a similar bridge layout and front profile, you'd effectively end up with the stubby triangular shape of a sidewinder. The boxy rear end makes sense too, because something sleeker with the same footprint would have a lot less module space.

Sorry not seeing it. You know the ships shapes go back to the wire frame models of the original elite, they had serious limitations with what they could actually do back in the 80s. So they have basically kept the original shape of all the classic ships from that era.

Nah, I know that, I mean the designs are homages to the tried and true Elite. I get that part of it. And honestly it's because of my appreciation for the beauty of these models that I stare at them as often as I do. But take a look at these screenshots. To me it looks like the back of the hull should connect to something. that the metal wingy bits in the back are some kind of connector that plugs into internal docking latches, and the U shaped void in the middle should be plugged into something.

To me it looks like it should plug into some larger secondary hull, one that's meant to be detached and then you can still fly around in the front section which is the cobra proper.

call me weird for thinking that, it just seems like because of the color difference, the lack of paint, the exposed airlock and hand rails, it's has a "behind the scenes" look to it, as if to say, you wouldnt see this when it's connected up.

IDR which specific connector, but I believe the Cobra buttvents are based on some type of hardware connection port. The thread for that was ancient though.

INARA built a particle accelerator and every time they spit something it created smaller triangles thus the ships were designed :)

If you look at a Viper MKIV from above, it kinda looks like a Cobra MKIII with an engine room and extended thrusters stuck on the back of it.

On second thoughts, maybe the Cobra is just a community goal Viper that only managed to hit tier 3? :)

They're triangular so they'll fit on the end of our Anacondas and Corvettes when we need to ram something. Like Thargoids.

Tip of the spear and all that, you see. :D

Because it looks cool. Seriously, I sincerely consider the Cobras to be the best looking ships in any sci-fi.

They are shaped like the heads of those snakes from which they take their names.

Yes indeed. This is correct.

So now with that knowledge you can see that the ships really are the front section of something larger.

The OP was not far off the mark.
