We have 8 kinds of limpets now, we have almost as many kinds of scanners. We shouldn't. It's a bloated system that can be easily modified so that we have something that is streamlined, intuitive and potentially enhances (or make meaningful) Multi-Crew.
Create an aggregated "Scanner Suite" or "Limpet Suite". The bigger/more expensive the suite module, the more sub-functions you can attach to it (Like bays for your SLF module), each one having their own cost (like SLFs or Vehicles). A D-rated limpet controller can do 1 or 2 functions, whereas an A can run 6 different functions. Same with the scanner. Allow these functions to be engineered, just like before, allow the ship to carry more than one of each type (So you could switch back and forth between a wide-beam scanner and a long-range narrow-beam scanner, for instance).
Now here is the key part: make it cumbersome for an individual Commander to toggle between all of these things while at the helm (without some clever automation). But make it easy for a scanner or engineer seated multi-crew person to do it. Incentivize Commanders to either work as a wing and distribute/share these functions, or work as a crew on large ships to accomplish the same thing. Stop bogging down ships with dozens of modules that you have to swap in and out to be somewhat functional, and make these systems independent from the Helm. Stop making us sacrifice key ship functionality to hold a scanner or programming unit that does one very narrow function that is only applicable in one edge-case. Give us a system that would benefit from a dedicated crewman and suddenly, Multicrew is relevant again. Especially if you unlock scanners and limpets from Forward-Facing/Firing only. Make people at those stations able to rotate like turreted weapons so they can operate independent of the ship's heading.
