The first image isn't quite right. Pads 1 and 13 should have their positions swapped, pads 31-34 should be in the opposite order from front to back, and pads 16-30 should come before pads 31-45 when going clockwise. That said, the first image being incorrect should highlight the reason why the proposed pad numbering system would be useful.
If I asked you where pads 13, 22, and 34 were, would you be able to tell me EXACTLY where they were? You probably wouldn't be able to without looking at a station layout diagram.
Now, what if I asked you where pads C09, C11, and E02 were? Obviously C09 and C11 are in the third row at the 9 and 11 o'clock positions (respectively) and E02 is in the fifth row at the 2 o'clock position. That wasn't nearly as hard as finding 13, 22, and 34.
Overall, I very much approve of something like this, I'm just not sure if the amount of dev work required to do this would justify the benefit. Maybe if we see a full-blown docking rework with improved docking UI. Still, +1 from me.
