Relative movement indicator

That's what this ugly space dust is for, to show you your vector.
There are so many small details in this game that actually do alot of what is requested... I remember when I started to berate my friends about things and then tell but look at that, use hat etc...navigation orb is one such device that I learned can alot more than guide you in super cruise... but how do we teach new players this without overwhelming them...

Please place a reticle around ship in HUD showing movement relative to orientation.

This would greatly aid in FAOFF flight

TIA :)

Can you elaborate how would this work? how do deal with all the way we can move?

Moving up/down/left/right/forward/backwards
Pithcing up/down
Yaw left/right
Roll left/right

How do you suggest to show this in the HUD?

Instead of trying to teach them everything at once teach them over time. Start with the basics. Also, have them practice on the training tutorials and have them watch the videos.

a simple 3d vector would do. coordinate axis could be drawn to avoid ambiguity (much like the radar does). speed could be represented via length, thickness or color of the vector.

then again, yeah, space dust.

Back in the Alpha days I'm sure we had this. If I recall correctly dull orange bars would track across the hud to show vertical and horizontal strafing

I'm not sure exactly what the OP is asking for but I think its a vector indicator. I want one too. ... been asking for a while. The past 2 or 3 space sim games I played had them and imho extremely helpful.

Same. The ugly dust might also kind of do the job. But an actual indicator would make more sense. Although indeed, it would detract from the WW1 biplanes in space feeling and would poach on the post-vietnam-war planes in space area. :D

Nice video. Those are the old days. Ladder lines help some but what I want is a symbol on the HUD that tells me what direction the ship is traveling, a vector direction. My facing can be all over the place, up down L R etc etc. and the vector indicator stays pointed the direction my ship is traveling. GL HF

Space dust doesn't always do a good job of this. It's visibility is highly erratic and it often distracts from or obfuscates other visual cues.

Note the 3 Vector indicators surrounding the HUD, 1 at top for sideways movement and 2 left and right for tracking vertical movement

Better than what we've got now, but I preferred Jumpgate's 3D arrow.

Like this little yellow arrow?

This is an excellent idea and I wholeheartedly agree with the OP. I've been debating asking it myself.
Given that all flyable spacecraft in ED are designed to operate FA/Off, from a pilot's standpoint it seems silly not to have some sort of drift meter.
As for design, I like the above examples but really, all you'd need is a three-axis bar indicator: a line to indicate forward/aft drift, a cross to show drift in the vertical and lateral axes.

As stated above, the space dust can help, but it's inaccurate and unreliable as an indicator.
I would wholly agree with the idea of a drift indicator on the instrument panel. :)
