Reloading weapons mid-flight?

I love the autocannons on my Cobra. Nice nice nice...

But they do have this annoying tendency to stop firing at crucial moments because they need to reload. Is there a way to manually trigger a reload? I thought hiding hardpoints would do it, but apparently not.

Yeah, not being able to do a "tactical reload" has annoyed me too.
I dont know if its some kind of balancing issue or what made them decide against it.

Yeah, that would be nice. Although the current functionality also adds kind of tactical depth to the combat, as you need to judge when to shoot and watch the ammo. But the manual reload button would be better I think.

You'd have to eject the clip with the remaining ammo IMHO so that you'd loose whatever's left in your guns before loading a new clip.

That's one of the things that always annoyed me in shooters - when you reload, you just top up the existing ammo clip, which isn't very realistic. You should remove the old clip, ergo throwing away the ammo that's left in it and put a new one in.

well after i have finished a fight, if i only have a few rounds left in the clips i just fire them off into space to reload for the next encounter.. bullets are cheap :)

Yes of course, but it would be nice to make sure im able to time my line ups with cannons fully loaded!

Signed. Me too.

At least on my Asp with 6 guns and 4 point defence, you cant even see how much ammo is left. Only via the modules part in the right section.

That issue would be the first to fix.

What I don't get though is these are probably bay fed weapons, there shoudn't be any reloading at all. You won't see an A10 reloading their minigun mid combat!

Been asked a while back, but didn't happen. I would like a manual reload even at the expense of eject any ammo still loaded.

Why do we need to even reload at all?
These are ship mounted weapons. Ships that are in many cases into the hundreds of tonnes in mass. Is it a gamey mechanic or a poorly thought out one?
You don't get naval ships of an equivalent size today having to faff about with "clips" for their main guns. I thought weapons technology would of improved by the 3300's :)

+1 to reload please.

Two uses:

- Making sure I've got a full clip right before lining up an attack run.
- Keeping my various clips in sync: with four MCs it's common for them to get out of sync so they all end up reloading at random different times.

Trick I found. If you are attacking a small ship easy kill. Setup different loadouts. So when one reloading the other 1 or 3 weapons are firing.

But I agree on the reload option.

It's not a "clip" it's a magazine. Sweet Jesus. Plus, we don't know what caliber the rounds are, so thinking a minimum of .50 cal. an ammo box of 2500 rounds belt fed ammo would be the size of your average oil barrel.

Indeed.

Machine guns on fighter jets don't need to reload mid-shoot - they just chain and spam till the end instead.

If they want to add a mechanic where you need to stop firing once in a while it should be heat.

I agree. They could just have individual weapon heat (not shared like lasers). Once at maximum heat you can't fire, the time to cool off is the time it takes to reload.

There's two ways you could do it, a constant cool off, (i.e. you could continue to fire intermittently at maximum heat) or a instant cool off, where the weapon doesn't cool gradually but instantly cools if you don't shoot it for X seconds. Or maybe a mixture of the two.

Either way it would work like reloading with the annoyance of half full ammo. Manual reloading would require another button and there are probably plenty already.
