Remember that question re docking computer? Why is Planet landing package a module?

The question was brought up earlier about the docking computer and why it wasn't always installed in the ship. I don't want to go into that here but this thought popped into my head thinking about that:

All Horizons owners have the planetary landing package installed in a module in every ship.

Why is it a separate module and why is it not just part of your ship?

Would anyone ever remove it? It's a one-slot module anyway. I'd think it should be incorporated into the system the same as the discovery honker.

Thoughts?

the planetary landing suite is a seperate module most likely because they wanted to have it scale with different modules for different planets.
so you have to pay a few credits ingame to enable your ship for atmosphere

I would expect that if atmospheric landings becomes a DLC that could be done automatically but what you say seems reasonable.

May have been easiest way to prevent non-horizon owners from landing on planets.

You can sell that module if you don't intend a ship to ever land on a planet thus freeing up space.

you have to see it from the perspective that horizons was meant to be a 12 month season...
i am pretty sure the original plan was that we would already be able to land on other types of planets at this point. (and that does not mean those with atmosphere... there are lot others too)
different landing suits would have different mass and affect ship performance and such.

but then they decided that releasing on consoles and mac was more important...

the planetary approach suite is the only thing that can go in that slot though. there is nothing else that can go in it. its not upgradeable either.

The planetary apporache suite is really a "Just because" module

I'm pretty sure it's entirely to differentiate the people who bought Horizons from those who didn't. Not elegant, but it's simple. You buy Horizons, your ship gets the PL module and you can land. I'm not sure, but I think you can be in the same instance with someone who did not have Horizons...they just can't follow you down to a planet/moon.

Hoizons and non horizons players can be in the same instance, yes. But the game seems capable of differentiating who is and isnt horizons regardless of wether the module is installed or not.
And since that slot can only be used by the planetary suite its really there "just because"

I have to agree with Asmuth's feelings on this one; a module that can't be moved, swapped, upgraded or worked with in any way doesn't really need to take up screen space on a list of modules. It's about as important as having a cargo hatch module--in other words, irrelevant. It's not as if Horizons players have to buy the module, nor does the price of any ship change when you get Horizons to reflect the "new" module you now have. It's literally just a tag for Horizons players that's there for the system's sake and not ours. I think it could be removed from the outfitting screen as it serves no purpose for us to be able to select it, other than to sell it, which would seem kind of silly after buying Horizons in the first place...

If it's one of those things that Fdev sees as a "framework for future features and options" then fine; let's see those features then! Otherwise it's wasting screen space--and Elite Dangerous already has a bad problem with wasted screen real estate.

I've never thought I could sell that module. Never even touched it.
Probably because I owned just base game for some time, then upgraded to Horizons and this slot just appeared in my ship and every other I bought from that point onward. I knew that it was just a "DLC owner" sticker, therefore I ignored it.
