Astronomy / Space Reminder Perseids meteor shower

just in case you guys forgot, the annual Perseids meteor shower has started and will peak Monday night.

Thanks for the reminder.

Am I going to be able to see them even though I have some serious light pollution in my area?

Been having a look but nothing yet, not sure I am going to make it to 3 or 4 am :)

If you're in Europe, Monday/Tuesday is best it seems:
And speaking of which, the Perseids are infamous for presenting a double-fisted twin peak in activity. This year, the first climax for the shower is predicted for around 13:00 UT on August 12th, favoring Hawaii and the North American west coast, and the second peak is set to arrive 13 hours later at 02:00 UT, favoring Europe & Africa.

Must remember to watch out for that, but Scotland (being Scotland) it will likely have cloud cover. If anyone gets some of nice shots of it, feel free to post em!

shooting stars from the Perseids meteor shower last no more than 1 second on average, though you should see at least 1 every minute its going to be difficult to get any photos.

Well that depends on how intense the shower is. Some years have seen quite a bit of activity from the Perseids. Here is some amateur photos from the BBC website.

Also, if anyone doesn't know what part of the sky to look at for the Perseids, here is a handy map also from the BBC website.

The Met Office are forecasting mainly clear skies across much of the UK tonight - could be good.

a little overcast here in Hertfordshire with small patches of blue sky, hope it clears up in the next 4 hours.

North Holland. Totally clear skys but still too light to see any stars or shooting stars.

I'll have to check later.

Have just seen a few, one of them was really bright.

Woke 5 year old daughter as per instruction (she insisted) who promptly missed all of them through complaining that she was cold. It is the first time she has ever requested to go back to bed :)

Anyway, I am a happy man because this is the first year I have seen them.
