Remote Play Controls?

I love the idea of Elite Dangerous via remote play, using the PS4 and the PS Vita, but I am more than a little curious as to how the control system will work.

No doubt there will be at least one 'shift' style button which can duplicate the function of other buttons, to map the many different controls required; but I wonder if the touch screen will be used for firing hard-points, like in NMS? I wasn't overly impressed with the less-than intuitive nature of that game played with the Vita. I mean, it was ok, but a bit fiddly.

Also, will the rear touchpad be utilised?

Maybe we'll just have to wait until the game is released to discover what the controls will be like (unless a helpful dev wants to enlighten me), but I can't help wondering...

Anyway, for NON-remote play, I am very much looking forward to using the PS4 Thrustmaster Flight Stick. I am so used to using one like that on the PC anyway, it will feel incredibly natural (once the controls are mapped in exactly the same way, of course). My issue with the Xbox version was always that I struggled to go from a Hotas to a control pad, and then back again.

Oh, yeah, I have bought this game several times! I think I must like it. ;)

I can't see them being able to get a working control scheme without it. I don't plan on even _trying_ to fly with it, but to take care of some 'administration' tasks on it during the day to make use of <ahem> break time at work ;-)

*ahem* quite! ;)

I'm wondering if the rear touchpad will use some of the functions of the front pad on the PS4 controller. Maybe it will be useful in navigating the galaxy map?

From the PS4 FAQ:
Will the DualShock 4 touchpad be utilised at all?

Elite Dangerous supports the DUALSHOCK 4 controller in the following ways:

Touch Navigation. Explore Elite Dangerous & map of the Milky Way with a swipe using touchpad controls that make navigation fast and easy.

Extra Control. Customize four additional touchpad hotkeys to suit your own play style.

Fast Headlook. Quickly track your enemies in the heat of combat with optional motion-based headlook controls powered by the DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller.

Hmm...

Well most games map L3/R3 to the rear touch pad. I think they will also have to use the front touchscreen in flight as well. Map screens, well the front touch screen is a no brainer for that. Some games have set up pretty good controls with the Vita (Star Wars Battlefield and Fallout 4) but the Vita is so ergonomically awful I just use my DS4 on the odd occasion I have used it for remote play.

I've got my fingers crossed for decent vita controls as well as it's a lot easier sneaking a vita into work than a windows ten tablet and controller lol ;)

If they left the triggers for weapons they could use lower left and right front screen for throttle and the upper left and right for the thumbsticks buttons (alt fight mode and headlook on xbox) the centre front touchpoint could be left to us to bind.

Then they can either leave the rear touchpad for us to bind either four or two controls as it's the least accurate imo.

The context sensitive front buttons would work the same as the main game using the d pad :)

I just hope the screen is big enough for all the text as it would look stunning on handheld!

Great idea, that would work really well IMHO.

I have the original OLED one. It really is a fantastic screen. I was initially thinking that headlook on the Vita wouldn't work but I have played a little on Tearaway and the responsiveness of the gyro or whatever you call it that senses movement is pretty good.

They must be confident of it being playable or they wouldn't even have announced it. I never expected it to be honest.

I am going to test my PS Vita via the internet remote play at lunch to see if its all working as I could never get it working over the internet. Wish me luck!

I forgot the vita even had a gyro tbh lol so that's good news :)

Unfortunately I've not got the OLED version as I was late to the vita party as it does look much better :(

At the end of the day all buttons within elite are totally configurable so we can rebind to our hearts content :) the key for me is if they enable all five contact points on the more accurate front screen! That way it's at least personal choice if you want to risk using the rear pad as you could just leave it unbound and still mirror the xbox controls :)

Good luck!

Not good news, oddly if the PS4 is switched on, all is fine, PS Vita finds it and all good. If the PS4 is in rest mode (even though I have the "Switch PS4 on via network" in rest mode settings enabled it just never switches on.

Have you checked to see if you have UPnP on your router?

Any old guy who's new to video games can tell ya, though one (I) maybe right handed, when useing a conventional controler by any branding, one (I) seem to have two lefts. And and all fingers have been replaced wiit thumbs. Thus using an HOTAS is the best option. Though we'll need one of the grand kids to configure it for us.

I do. I have always used UPnP as I find doing manual port forwarding or DMZs not the best way to handle it. Going to try as someone suggested using the PS Phone App to turn it on, but doh! I have not linked them so will have to try tomorrow.

Is your PS4 connected to your router via wifi or cable?
Have you added a fixed IP for your PS4?

Fixed IP, hard wired directly to the router. I am going to check MAC addresses tonight to as I saw a Reddit post about routers keeping the old PS4 MAC address and not picking up when the PS4 Pro had been swapped in. So worth a shot.

Are you connecting from wifi at work with your VITA?

I'd try it away from home on a friends wifi as I've got a feeling it doesn't work over mobile Internet :(

I'll try that thanks, although why would it work when the PS4 is on if that was the case? Its not always not working, it just can't wake the PS4 up.
