I know, people are going to say we need the money sink. I feel that is an orthogonal argument and even if we accept it as true, the money-sink can be elsewhere.
(1) You're changing ships' stats -- Understandable, you need to balance.
-- Maybe your changes mean that the Python doesn't fit someone's purpose anymore, and it's not through any fault of theirs. The -universe- changed out from under them.
(2) It discourages trying any of the more expensive ships.
-- I'm flying a clipper, because I was pretty damn certain I'd enjoy it. I thought about buying a T7 before I got there and the main reason I decided against it is that it would cost me 1.7 million credits to try it out. So I didn't. Still don't know what the T7 is like, and I probably never will as it's not worth 1.7 million to find out.
As a second suggestion: Normalize the sale of ships/modules. Selling modules to save the money you'd lose if you traded the ship in is simply an exercise in tediousness and pointlessly punishes players who don't know that you can do it.
You've made several design choices where you chose gameplay over realism. I suggest that this be another.
