Remove the traveling grind

I’ve suggested this many times, however the only response I got was from FDEV leaving FD.
So I guess it’s kind of a taboo?

If I use a certain word people goes balistic here, so I won’t, however the need to remove grind in the game is as needed as it was 4 years ago.

When you need to go somewhere you need to plan your route, that’s cool, the galaxy map is better than it ever was, after you pick a destination the grind begins, press (J) jump raise and repeat until you lose your sanity or reach your destination. Now the are pros and cons involved here, if we use the docking computer to dock it is an option for those who don’t want to dock manually, or if they just want to kick back and eat something while the ship is docking, some elite sessions are quite long you know!

I, and this is my personal opinion, simply got bored with this mechanic so I, and still do, set the game on pause. This was the intro, and you know where I’m going with this right ;)

I would like to have a function, that removed the grind in traveling from star to star, I would like to keep the time, only remove the micro management from this traveling mechanic.

It will not make the game easier nor would it make the game less playable at the contrary it would make the game more enjoyable. It could be an NPC crewman/woman/bot or it could be a piece of equipment you need to buy.

How far are you going exactly? You can go from one side of the bubble to the other in a few jumps these days (depending on ship).

Are you asking for a hyperspace auto-pilot?

Sounds like it and doubtful anything close to this will ever happen. That's not a statement for or against the idea I have no dog in this fight just don't see such a thing ever happening realistically speaking. Closet you can get would be to try to enslave a friend in multicrew pvp to fly your ship for you like a chauffeur lol.

Heh, I suppose it's about time this came up again! ;) I'm pretty sure that the previous conclusions were that an autopilot wasn't going to happen...

...So I guess it’s kind of a taboo?
Nah it's just increasingly pointless flogging what by now must be wholly unrecognisable as ever having been horse...

Isn't the time bit the main issue though, the micromanagement - press jump, wait, maybe fuel scoop, align with next destination, press jump, repeat etc. isn't that arduous...? What would you do in the meantime? and no watching Netflix isn't a good answer, even if it's true...

Grind means different things to different players and play styles, you seem to be asking if the flying through open space parts cant be optionaly automated because it dosent suit your play style. This has been brought up many times in the past and you already know this as it's not changed in 4 years. Game options are always a good thing though for those who want to use automation as an option, maybe one day it will happen though I'm not one who would use it.

The word Autopilot is maybe not the right word, it should more be a function incorporated in the route planning phase, where you can set more parameters in your route. To those who ask who far would I go, wel, as far as I can would be the answer.

As I see it now, you are just doing a repetitive mechanic and it gets boring, to the question what would I do if I didn’t need to micro manage the jumps? Well it could be many things, but really this it not important, what is important is why keep this function when it’s easy to make something that would make some players happy not to do a task that is so repeatedly in the game.

I agree the sentiment and also the subsequent comment that its the time-sink that is the issue for me

I will continue to campaign via occasional lightly-salted forum posts for some sort of game mechanic whereby you can make vast jumps in 1 go, for example, 50 or so "jump-spots" perhaps created via community goals (lol) that can enable players to get around the galaxy map a little more expeditiously

It would not cut out the grind/enjoyment of exploring! It would simply make it a little less time-consuming to get to exploration way-points. And yes it could require a module (Fdev could introduce a nice long grind to get the module, like having to explore 20,000 light years from Sol) or some other gameplay mechanic.

Open your mind to the possibilities! We need this in the 2020 update!

That’s ok, some people also injoy counting roundabouts, I just like to get the feeling I’m in an actual spaceship, just as I like to use the function in flight simulation, simulating real airplanes :)

So how would this make the game more enjoyable?

what happens if you are on your "autopilot" and you get interdicted?

what should happen when you reach your destination system? should drop you to normal space, as that is the only way to actually be still, supercruise has a speed, and no matter where you point the ship, it will travel in that direction until you fly into the void or do an emergency stop before crashing into something...

Fuel scooping, should that be automated too? if not, how would the "autopilot" handle out of fuel situations? stop you at the last fuel scoopable star?

So how do you suggest this should work, so that it does not break existing game mechanics, like interdictions. And if you set a destination that is some 20 minutes away, what should you be doing during that time?

A long time ago there was a mod, in that mod you set your destination and off you go, fuel scooping was still on manual, and if interdicted you, well got interdicted and needed to react on it, so it could be done the same way.

Check your map, program when to fuel and lean back and relax until you get to your A) fuel point B) destination.
I could spend a lot of time checking the galaxy map, and I could do that while I’m going to my POI.

I would go the otherway myself.
personally i would rather they made travel - esp if you are looking at doing 10s of jumps (more so 100s of jumps) far MORE interactive, with all sorts of equipment failures and thingymebobs which need twaddling ;)

i am certainly not against the idea of an npc crewperson who could be asigned the job of helmsperson... but the flip side would be you would be expected to do other stuff like retuning you FSD or having to repair damage to XYZ which failed after the last botched fuel scooping, or having to replot your route after you discover an anomaly which has changed something so you have to re route.

That was actually in the design phase from the beginning, FD just dropped it for some reason.
