Removing unwanted local factions

Newb question, I know, but how does one go about getting rid of another faction that has expanded into their system?

My wing was actively participating in the local war, between a minor faction, not even the majority power in the system and an invading power, who aren't even the majority in their own system. Then yesterday, the invader's influence went from about 19% TOPS to over 50% in under 6 hours and the war promptly ended. Now the stations in the system are flooded with jobs for the new power, and there doesn't seem to be any way to undermine the invading power.

There are a few ways to influence minor factions, like taking missions, abandoning missions etc, they all have an effect on influence. I do know how to get a minor faction to expand, but I'm not sure about getting rid of one, but I would guess the influence hast to got to zero and then they should no longer own any stations, that might do it.
Maybe you can get a clear answer from the devs by posting this question in Zacs Stickie post?

I've not managed to completely remove a faction from Betel but I did get it down to zero percent (it might have been 0.1%?).

The minor faction part of the background sim is bugged to heck. If you want to promote a faction then be prepared to spend more time writing bug reports and support tickets than doing missions.

I agree with Lima, it's bugged to all hell and really has been since launch. There have been some cases of successful system flipping but usually involved the devs fixing a stuck queue or making some other change. Right now I'd have to say that the background sim is unreliable at best.

I've been trying to "fortify" the only local Imperial faction in a Winters-controlled system somewhere, and wanted to see how far I could get with this on my own, without pledging to anyone.
Been doing charity missions as much as I could, and also picking missions for "my" faction that offer medium-high influence increase upon completion. Smuggling in particular, rapidly seemed to rise Rep and Influence.
I also tried "undermining" (again, without pledging to a power) the other present factions, by only hunting their wanted targets, and leaving my faction's guys alone.

I'm about to give up, after a week or two.
When I started this, my Imperial faction was at 79% influence, and while playing, I saw it rise to 86%.
Then had to take a brake for a couple of days, and when I came back, it was at 2%...played for a few evenings, got it to 8%.
Then the next day, it was back at nearly zero, and decreasing even further.

All this in a system that doesnt see much cmndr traffic.
Most players only go there to claim Empire bounties.
In a wing it might be different, but a single cmdr like me will get frustrated in no time.
Well anyway, it was an experiment...PP without pledging.

Was it before they fixed some bugs that drastically changed minor faction influence in a 1.3.0x patch?

I just went through the patch notes, and found the relevant bit in 1.3.01:

- Fix faction influence levels when many factions experience significant influence drops in a given star system

To address problems from the above issue, all minor faction influence levels in all star systems have been reset back to their state just before the release of 1.3

1.3.01 was released on the 9th of June, well before I experienced all those fluctuations.

If it wasn't due to some bugs that FD wasn't aware yet, I would guess it's a coordinated effort done by many CMDRs. I myself have seen a graduate power shift from Empire to Fed in my current cluster these days and it's really worrisome, which is why I'm also eager to know the answer of OP's question.

Ok, in case anyone's interested, I'm talking about LHS 2310...it's one of the few systems near Sol with an Empire prescence. But for how long? I think most (independed) bounty hunters in the area would like to keep it.

*edit
Next week, i'm off on holidays for 2 weeks....guess I'll need to find a new home when I get back :p
