Rename "Chrome", "Chromed", "Gold" and "Golden"

It has been a long-time complaint that the names of those four ship paintjobs are confusing. Many people have purchased eg. the "Chromed" paintjob for their ship only to find out it wasn't actually what they wanted, ie. the mirror-like "Chrome" paintjob.

Thus, I suggest renaming those paintjobs to be clearer. For example: Mirror Chrome, Brushed Chrome, Mirror Gold, Brushed Gold.

Totally reasonable. These paint jobs weren’t generally available for a while, and I don’t think they’ve ever been available at the same time before, so there was no need for disambiguation until now. And I’m guessing these’ll be unavailable again soon so probably they won’t bother updating the names.

I am not sure... I just see them before buy.

But what happens the next time they adjust the engine visuals and the 'look' completely changes again? 😛 The reason we got the ed/en versions was because the originals did not look anything like the mirror finishes we have now. They made them as compensation for the original looking lackluster and they were considered better, and they were, for a time.

The original gold for example was more like the cheap metallic gold you'd see on metal furniture. The chrome was a bit better I think but not the mirror it is now.

Strangely I always thought Golden looked like the cheap plastic sports trophies you would see in a sports shop window while Gold looked much better.

There was never any confusion in the store before of course as this is the first time they have been on sale at the same time..

But how far back does your 'always' go? There was a time when the Gold was not good at all, which was why Frontier felt they had to cough up Golden. if it was always better they wouldn't have bothered.

Are any major revisions of the rendering engine likely to happen any time soon? I think a name change to better reflect (heh) how these paintjobs come across in the current state of things would be a sensible move.

I recently used some of my accumulated Arx to get the mirror chrome finish for my Corvette. In deep space it kind of looks like it's carved out of polished obsidian, but when it's near planets it actually reflects them pretty well. Calling it mirror chrome would more accurately convey what it looks like. I assume the mirror gold paints are much the same.

Who can say. Many have said that the think the engine lighting got worse when Ody came around. If the Devs share this opinion then they may already have plans to tinker with it again. 🤷‍♂️

The Gold paint looks much better quality now then when I first got it a long time ago. Love the way it reflects the surroundings whether it's the deep black of space or the bright environment of inside an orbital station. Beautiful 😍
