Rename Newly Discoverd Systems

I think we should be able to rename the planets and stars that we first discover. All the features that would make this work are in the game already.

Nope. Frontier would have to employ a large number of staff doing nothing but checking the names for obscenities. Would you be prepared to pay a subscription for that?

Obscenities can be filtered out (mostly) automatically, but even more of a problem would be the majority of stupid joke names, Commander's spouse's/kids'/crush's/pets' names appearing multiple times, misspelled words, etc. It could be quite immersion breaking if not handled carefully.

Maybe give us a limited number of naming claims per week or something, to stop it flooding the galaxy with weird names.

Well, isn't it the same with the naming of ships?

No because a single commander can only own a max of, what is it 30 ships? And how many new ships a week would you be buying once you hit that max, almost zero. But a single commander can discover thousands of new planets a week and put in thousands of new names, then multiply that by the number of commanders out exploring, it's in a different league altogether.

Also, the ships are property of the in-game Commander and if the Commander gives their ship a stupid or comical name, then that's just a reflection of that person's humour and personality. That's not immersion breaking. Go to any marina and you'll see dozens of boats with fun, quirky names.

When it comes to planet and system names, these are scientifically catalogued navigational landmarks. If I was seeing Moonie McMoonface etc. on a regular basis I'd get very tired of it.

If the volume of re-names became a problem then you could restrict it to something like:

Once you hit Elite in Exploration you get to name one system for which you have first discovery tagged on all bodies in that system. For every 250 Million* in discovery data after this, you get to name another system.

*This amount might not be 250 million, it depends on how much FDev want to rate-limit the rename process.

This is perfect IMO: something non-financial to aim for, and a kudos reward for reaching Elite. Plus it would limit the submissions enough that FDev could manually vet then if need be.

This was brought up within the last couple of weeks and met with resistance because of the lack of dynamic capability of the obscenity filters. Keep in mind this game has been ESRB/PEGI rated to 10 and up.

I'll say it again; this is not a good idea. We have a commander in the First Discovered By the name of Manfaced Missiletits. And given the way kids come up with slang that completely circumvents swear/nanny filters (like Dirty Sanchez as I used this as an example the last time this was brought up) I would prefer the naming convention in the Milky Way to be pristine -- albeit occult -- to the average player.
