Rename the Bulkhead Category

Dear Frontier,

The Bulkhead category doesn't make sense. The items within the category are clearly external hull plating. A bulkhead is a division between compartment of a ship, designed to seal off that section in case of flooding (or exposure to space in our case).

The category's name makes even less sense now that y'all have added the hull reinforcement package to the game. I suggest changing the name of the bulkhead category to hull plating and changing the description of the HRP to mention that it is adding armor beneath the hull plating (makes since, as the armor would decrease internal space). This is how real warships are built, the have a void space between inner and outer hull and armor belts are added in critical spots.

Hopefully a Dev reads this. It's a simple thing to change and it's certainly nothing game breaking but just irks me when I have to deal with these components.

*edit* I just re-read the description for the HRP, it now makes EVEN LESS SENSE! The HRP does not provide resistance to anything, it just adds more hit points in the form of armor. Bulkheads is clearly the outer hull of the ship and HRPs are the armor belts underneath. In a game that prides itself on being accurate when it comes to these kind of details, someone really dropped the ball on this one. . .

I don't know anything about warship design. If what you say is true, I don't see why it shouldn't be changed to reflect what you're getting accurately.

However, seeing as it has absolutely no impact on the gameplay what so ever, I have to say you're nitpicking (no matter how correct you may be).

What I'm saying is true, at least as far as WWII ship design goes (I can't imagine that it has changed much). As far as nitpicking? The info is so stupid it makes my eye bleed reading it. It would take them about as much time to change it took me typing the original post. . . .

But exposure to space isn't an issue in Elite with the bio systems module? Loose the front window who cares with 20 minutes to get to a station? Who cares if the cargo bay depressurises?

Shouldn't the Bulkheads name be replaced with "Structural Integrity?" or "Structural re-enforcement?"
... which makes a lot more sense?

I would not call the OP 'nitpicking' since he is hardly screaming the roof down over this point - and he does have one.
There are a number of small, irksome things in the game that could do with a layer of polish just to help with the immersion, I think this is one of them - as it bothers me as well.

The issue is that the items under the "bulkhead" category are clearly describing hull plating. You wouldn't have a mirror finished bulkhead, it wouldn't do any good when the laser is striking and heating up the hull plating.

Yay! Ty, have a rep!

I had assumed the ships were designed similar to submarines. Larger submarines use double hulls, essentially a "bulkhead" between the water and the subs interior spaces. Think of it this way, if a bullet/laser/missle blows a hole in your "bulkhead" it does not cause your ship to become depressurized. As for the HRP they would probably be installed in the space between bulkheads. As for them using an interior slot i just chalk it up to weight balance.

On the one hand, I don't much care, because it's trivial. On the other hand, it would be equally trivial to do, so +1 for an issue the devs can fix with virtually no discernible effort whatsoever. :)

That was my understanding, too. Battleships also have (or at least had) "bulkheads" as additional hull layers to minimise the effect of torpedo hits.
