Engineers Rent a Car

Hello People,
i'm not sure if someone already made this suggestion, but...what do you think about the idea, being able to rent a SRV if you are docked and Planetary Outposts? Have a ship with no Hangar? No Problem, as long as you dock on an Outpost you can lend one from us^^ Don't drive too far, you have to get back :D:p

Very good idea. I'm fed up lugging my srv around in my vulch. I have lots of 'no claims discount' so would be low risk ;)
Have some rep

Not a bad idea at all, though I suspect that they might have to ask for a deposit. Too much of an incentive to go canyon-jumping otherwise...

Presumably you'd have to pay extra for the Accidental Damage Waver and ensure you returned it with a full tank of fuel, or they'd charge you for the equivalent pump prices at Mars High? If it was to be really realistic, they'd need to deliver one with a dodgy wheel thruster that sends you into the nearest crater, but fail to circle it on the pre-hire damage inspection sheet? :D

Another great idea which would more than likely make the to-do list, but it not being marketing material or a significant selling point means that it's so far down that list it won't see the light of day any time soon.

I'm not sure if the Elite universe is safe enough to allow car rentals... :)
Jokes aside I believe they should add an additional internal slot to every ship to allow adding hangars to fitted ships. But it should still be optional; tradeoffs are good, up to some point.

It would need a reasonable charge per 100m or maybe a flat rate if hired for a certain amount of time.

That sounds fun - not one I'd use, as I tend to take a lot of surface missions and often to uninhabited planets, but that would open up a bit of planetary exploring to an extra bunch of CMDRs.

To what purpose? Materials gathering? Sightseeing? It's hard to think of anything else you could effectively do within the constraints of having to go from and to a base.

Given how cheap and easy it is to pick up a class 2 planetary vehicle bay at practically any station, how often would you ever need this? Heck, if you don't want to swap out internals you could pick up a whole Sidewinder and kit it out with a vehicle bay for practically pocket change.

Yes, materials and data gathering quite obviously. That's like the main activities you do with it.

A hangar plus SRV is quite a lot of dead space and weight if you don't use it frequently for missions - and one would expect renting to be far cheaper than kitting out a spare sidewinder with it (it's not pocket change for everyone - nor is everyone interested in owning multiple ships and changing between them).
