Rented cargo storage at stations

I've been thinking and I would love to have this. An ability to rent cargo storage at a station to store cargo in for later trading. Like when you find some rare commodities, but don't want to run 120+ ly away to trade 10 tonnes just now, but save it for later and maybe accumulate rare commodities at one station. So when you can fill your ship with, say 216 tonnes, rare commodities and jump 120+ ly to sell them for one big profit.

Maybe one could also use this storage to store outfit stuff in. For instance, imagine I need to remove my weapons or a shield and the station I am operating from do not have the A5 shield in the outfit, then I could store it and come back and fit it later.

Just some ideas to make one place in Elite feel more like home or a base of operations.

I imagine the rent could be something like 5,000 credits for 100 tonnes of storage space pr. 24 hours.

When I was doing missions, and noticed that the same items were frequently needed, I thought how convenient it would be to be able to stock up on those items and then just sit in front of the BB and accept and fulfil missions without having to leave the port cos I've got a stock of them. I think the devs probably saw though that wheeze - I suspect they want you out of bed and in your cockpit, flying. I even tried to sidle around it by doing missions in a L6, and buying up extra stock of items that I knew by then were often needed fo missions. That worked occasionally but, of course, we're playing against a computer that necessarily must see what's in our holds, and therefore does not offer missions for those things.

I think though, that it might be do-able for storage of temporarily decommissioned kit. I won't hold my breath though.

Dev quotes from the DDA thread:

Hi all,

Just to leave a note on transferring cargo.
We really don't want people being able to store container ships full of cargo, having items hidden away and out of circulation. I'm quite open to the idea of transferring cargo to a ship you have just bought (assuming any cargo you can't fit into the new ship is sold immediately).

Any opinions on that system or alternatives to it would be welcome!

and

Hi Slopey, Tom's on holiday for a little bit so I'll answer your question.

We do not want players to be able to stock pile resources in their cargo holds and store the ship so that they can wait for an appropriate meta game event to happen where they can capitalise on their exploits.

We want players to have to operate in the moment to moment game play so that when the event occurs that means certain goods become very valuable they have to go and find those goods right then and there to make a good profit not just get their stocked up anaconda from weeks ago out of storage and take advantage without having to do anything special or risky as part of the event.

There is probably nothing anyone could suggest to change our stance on this. Additionally we would be much happier to say we're not going to do this now and then perhaps in future realise we could offer this to the player base than risk the opposite which is to give you all that power and then take it away from you in future.

When combined with (the yet to be implemented) ship transfer from remote locations, storage of cargo in ships would enable drone trading of a sort.

The stations are huge. I mean, several kilometers huge..

I guess Elite Dangerous 400,000,000,000 star system is also huge. Which will take a lot of Server space. Which I assume could be use for game play vs someone storage space.

Note why don't you think it this way. Your current ship that you are flying is all in one. Even your Bank But it adds risk and reward. If you die you lose your Banked items.

Those arguments wouldn't apply to equipment, though, would they? since the buy/sell price is the same.
A lot of times the equipment is on another ship. If the user willing to sell the ship to use on another ship would not be bad idea.

Thanks Robert. But I wouldn't need a huge space of cargo. Just about 50-100 tonnes as a max. Not enough to be stockpiling a fortune, just a small stash and room for outfittings.

That is all that required to run a exploit. I can see it now. Fly a ship to Lave get Lavian Brandy. Store it at a Near by Station. Then buy more until a player can get a full cargo. Then sell it all at once and we have a Exploit.
