With all the new fandangled damaged stations popping up, simply supplying the station with "stuff" is rather dull.
Well, unless you like trading. Lol
But how about an actual repair role?
Repairing a station manually could involve using FA-Off (or not) to match and hold a set position to fire some repair lasers and keep them on target for a set time, until that section is marked "repaired".
Once done, you get assigned a new area to fix.
Stations could be given various random "subsystems" to target, and these are what you target with your lasers and limpets.
It's all just fluff, and if you leave the instance, or wait too long, it reverts back to damaged, but all repairs you perform can reduce the commodity cost of the repairs globally.
Each player in the instance would see different damaged subsystems, as not to have all the CMDRs trying to repair the same spot at once.
(This method is used in many MMOs for community events, I think)
Repair limpets could be used aswell, to do the repairs easier, but less effectively, for those with poor fixed weapon and FA skills. Or if they're just being lazy. Lol
With the addition of station subsystems, you can also then add ways to actually sabotage stations, using some kind of jamming/hacking limpet.
These would be very dangerous, but well paid. And effect the BGS somehow.
You'd need to survive in order to complete the mission.
If we ever get real time attacks on stations, then real time repairs could be brought in too.
You could be asked to repair the weapons, or countermeasures to help defend from the Thargoids. Which would be a fun alternative to actually directly fighting the Thargoids.
Imagine being called by the station to repair a main AX guns on the station, that's been knocked out by the Thargoids. So you zip over, dodging enemy fire, fire up the repair laser (or limpets), and try to bring it back online while taking fire, then watch it take down the Thargoid.
I think It'd feel just as rewarding as killing the Thargoid yourself.
Providing you wasn't in the way when it fired up. Lol
Just some random thoughts.
