Repairs whilst exploring.

Hi. It would be nice if, whilst exploring the back of beyond, 1000's of LY from inhabited space, you could park your ship up somewhere, get your spacesuit on, go outside and make some repairs (especially wear and tear). At the bare minimum, you could clean the bleeding windscreen.

Obviously, there would have to be limits. Nobody's going to be able to repair their ship from 3% hull to full working order armed only with a basic Halford's toolkit and a Haynes manual, but something would be nice. Repairs could even require mined ores refined into metals, or components previously bought from stations.

Just an idea.

What you should never do:
Using the auto repair system on your FSD while traveling in SC at more than 300c...
Really, don't do it ;)

Nice idea .. I for one do hope that when planned expansions allow you to leave your seat, EVA is on the agenda. Being able to repair manually, via some skill based system, perhaps offset by repair modules you can stock up with, sounds like awesome fun to me .. "Warning there is a tear in your pressure suit, return to the airlock immediately!" :D

I like the idea of being able to using mining to get the materials needed to replenish the auto repair module. And why caln't the ARM fix the hull up to a point? (say 75%) Glass is simply sand and heat, so that could be repaired to a working, order. Or, if replacing a broken window completely is impossible, why not allow cracks to be repaired - we can do that now on car windscreens, so I'm sure they'll have the resin available in 1000 years.

Too complicated and time consuming to code. On the other hand, having a community goal for folks who are into exploring to build some 'research' stations with repair capability out there in the depths of space would easily fit into what is already possible with the current builds and would help achieve something similar.

An option to subscribe to and be able to call out the future equivalent of the AA/RAC would make more sense and be far easier to build into the game.
You make a comms call to the repair service, wait an appropriate in game time for the ship to come from a nearby station and jump to you and watch as a type 6 or equivalent turns up and proceeds to fix your ship.

Need to keep those subs up though...

it was in the "future of elite dangerous" video.

They talked about getting out of the seat for multiple reasons,
cleaning up spillages, repelling boarders, exploring derelicts, sneaking on board other ships,
zero-g combat.
going EVA to fix the hull of the ship.

flying a spaceship is just the rudimentary concept.

I see planetary landing and mining apparently are going to help the miners out.

Meaning all those "metal" planets with major or prestine reserves are going to be revisited.

I just made it back to civilized space on a wing and a prayer as they say and while I was sweating bullets, I was thinking the same thing, enable the player to do minor repairs in the form of mini games on key ship systems like life support, navigation and control circuitry that will allow you to get out of a sticky situation would be really useful. As for the windshield, I would vote for a transparent aluminum upgrade (thanks to Mr. Scott) or a glass cockpit feature instead, thus banning the window altogether and using the HUD instead as a way to see what's going on outside. I seriously doubt that glass or whatever is used now works as well as is currently shown this close to a star anyway. ;) Look ma, I didn't even get a sun burn.

Speaking of exploration, a counter on your HUD that shows the light-years traveled in your ship would be nice... but then this might be a downside when you are trying to sell it at a shipyard. :D
