Ship Builds & Load Outs Ships Replacement for the Bark and Byte ship guides?

Back in the day when I first started playing ED, there were a couple of excellent loadout guides in the Bark & Byte blog.
However, coming back to the game after five years out and starting from scratch, the blogs have long gone - were they ever updated/preserved elsewhere?
Is there a decent guide for beginners for ship upgrades and progression?

Once I feel I have earned some play time after doing a few things around the house.. still in the sidey and I seem to have a Eagle since restarting the game! Is this normal or am I reading my Inara imported data wrong?

Those who were around from the start (certainly those who were KS backers) were given an Eagle as a thank you, along with mercenary paint job (if memory serves).

Good question. Inara shows you own the 'Winder and an Eagle. The loadout shows for the Sidewinder, but the Eagle says loadout unknown, which makes me wonder what's going on. Maybe you sold it? I sold my Anaconda a long time ago and it stayed on my Inara fleet for quite some times afterward, until I manually removed it.

The Shipyard in any station will tell you. Look under Stored Ships

The eagle was in my starting station - I sold it today and got out of the Sidey and into an Adder which is where I wanted to be after the first day so only a 'day' behind.

Now I want to head to Aulin but I can't get a route planner to show how many jumps which is ... annoying!
Maybe I am better grinding in the Adder to get to a Cobra and get my combat ranking up before I head off.

Did you plot the route? If so, look in Navigation, left panel, to see the number of jumps.
Out of the game now but been messing about with EDDB and have found about a 6-hop route that will get me back to where I initially made my base when I last played about 5 years ago. Will grind up to a cobra and before I set off I will jump out to a few nav beacons and go for some easy kills to get the combat practice - if I recall I traded a lot until I got into a cobra and then with a better wepped up ship was able to get the combat rank going up - but I space-barred my old position as the game has changed completely since I was last in space.

It made sense to redo the training, flog my Freagle to get me out of the Sidey, and figured out a few more key bindings today. All a HUGE learning curve but I need to get out of the learner system with at least Novice - but that's this weekend's target!

Cobra's a cool ship. That's what I went to after the Sidewinder. I felt like I was really moving up in the galaxy flying the Cobra III. Good hunting commander.

Yeah, as a veteran of the old BBC B version, I won't really 'feel' as though I have achieved anything until I get back in one. From my previous ED life, if I recall, I ran trade routes (rares) and tried to largely stay out of trouble until I could get a far better ship and then worked on bumping up my combat before I left the game for five (count them) years!

I was saying in another thread - back in the day I would promise myself hours of play after homework/uni assignments. Now... it is doing my company accounts and editing radio clips, or knocking off some spring cleaning during lockdown!!!

One thing I noticed when I was trying to replicate my builds in coriolis - I seem to have a Planetary Landing Suite (?) that is not selectable and also my adder came with an advanced docking computer and a Supercruise Assist module that I have managed to add to my build... I am guessing maybe once I get out of the Pilot's Federation systems it is going to be a little more straightforward to spec things up ...

Want to try and get into a cobra and get my combat up before leaving and finding a good base to figure out a good mining ship outside of this arena. Again in the 2015 version of me, I had a cobra and I think a viper if I felt in a shooty-shooty-bang-bang mood... reading about decent mining ship loadouts and just want to set up a nice base near trade routes.... simple soul really!

All ships have a planetary landing suite fitted in a dedicated optional internal slot. You can sell it if you want, don't know why as you can't use the slot for owt else. I don't know why they didn't just say it was an in-built facility in the ship, like they did with the discovery scanner - but hey, it is F D, things don't need logic for them.

Ships had extra size 1 internal slots added some time back, small ships got two, others just one. Small ships come with SCA and ADC as stock in them, others with SCA.

BTW - yes ships and equipment are deliberately limited in the noob-zone.
