Hardware & Technical Replacement X79 motherboard needed, can you help?

(This is probably not the right place to post this, perhaps a moderator could shift it to the appropriate area, thanks.)

A few months ago had to rebuild my 4yo PC when the motherboard bricked but I am reluctant to chuck out a perfectly good CPU and 16GB quad-channel memory due to not being able to find a replacement (they don't make them any more).

I had specifically built that PC around an i7 3820 since the PC was exclusively for flight simulator use but now I just can't get hold of an Intel X79 chipset motherboard anywhere.

So - if anyone has access to a serviceable LGA 2011 socket R (not 2011-v3) Intel X79 motherboard that I can buy, please get in touch.

Cheers

It might help if you could indicate in which country you are located. For North America, I found a number of available mainboards on amazon.com. And yes, I can perfectly understand that you would not want to waste the CPU and RAM, they are still quite recent and useful.

Ha - yeah - I should have said I am resident in the UK.

I see second-hand versions going for over £200 on ebay and I think that is just too much of a gamble.

How is it bricked? there are some ways that bricked motherboards can be fixed, what happened?

Well and truly dead I'm afraid - burnt out caps and at least one track also gone. All thanks to a 660ti deciding to burst into flames, I'm hoping the cpu suffered no current issues, the tracks all look fine, just area around the 660ti's slot. All 4yrs old so no warranty.

I'm a retired electronics engineer so I can tell there is no way this is going to be resurrected.

They go for about that from Amazon too.

The only ones I have seen on Amazon are either second-hand or from China and I'm not confident of spending over £250 and getting nowt. I keep watching for them on eBay but they again run into those figures and I just am not to keen to fork out that for second hand boards.

My hope is that someone has upgraded their system and is prepared to flog off their old MOBO for a sensible figure.

If I have to fork out over £200 I shall just leave it and spend a bit more later to build another new system, maybe less spec than my current i7 6700K. I like to have a second PC running with my main one but the only other ones I have are older, 32-bit machines.

I assume that the 660 is out of warranty. However, some manufacturers do honor consequential damage claims. I.e., if your (sealed) Crucial water cooling system fails and destroys your computer, they fix it for free. Probably there is not much hope that way, but an email or support chat cannot hurt.

No chance I'm afraid. I couldn't even get a response from the link MSI sent me for their (outsourced) repair facility. (Only after this did I remove the motherboard to examine if I could attempt a repair myself whereupon I discovered the burnt track and I assume the multi-layer tracks are gone in that zone too.)

Not to worry, I had decided that I wasn't going to pay a lot for a second-hand board, just build a new system instead, but thought I might as well ask on these fora as a last chance sort of thing.

cheers

P.S. I am a pensioner so that is why I don't want to risk that sort of money on second-hand stuff, I'd rather save and build new, it's not a "tight Scotsman" thing. ;)

My god your a Scotsman, it's in your blood laddie. You can't be denying it man. Right now your probably trying to figure out how to make the motherboard into a place mat or something. Embrace your heritage and get on with it,

I'd wear a kilt if I only could afford one.

Good luck with finding a value 2011 non-V3 mobo. Especially since the market was flooded with dirt cheap Xeon E5-2670s, it isn't easy to find a mobo, also not helped by its age. The other thing to consider is looking for a server chipset mobo.

I have a spare X79 2011 board Gigabyte X79-UD3

Similar problem my x79 rig kept powering down, I thought it was the motherboard so got another one, same problem, but the new board has LED diagnostics so it looks like the CPU is the cause of the problem, so I have a spare Gigabyte X79-UD3 that most probably works - get in touch if interested. I built a new 1511 setup anyway but will try and resurrect the 2011 if I can get a replacement CPU (sadly its an expensive hexacore that is playing up).

I have only just seen this post, I can't PM you for some reason, perhaps if you could send me a PM we can talk about it as I am definitely interested.

Sorry I never noticed your reply.
