Newcomer / Intro Report Crimes against me

Hi!

What does "report crimes against me" exactly do? I read you can turn it of to practice dogfights with another player. BUT I also read in another thread that it might affect if the feds will show up when you get into a fight with wanted AIs.

Anyone with some more in depth info on this?

regards.

When you commit a crime there is a warning notice/massage listed on right side comms window.
I am not sure if that is the only thing it does.

If you deactivate this, someone shooting at you doesn´t ge a "Wanted" status. Good if you play with friends and do some bountyhunting. Friendly fire doesn´t result in a bounty on your own. Bad if you play in open game. Any other player can shoot at you without getting a bounty on his head. But noeone execpt you, can see if you have it active or not.

It essentially makes it legal for others to do illegal things to you. Its good if you don't want the cops showing up to 'help' you if you are also doing something wrong, ie smuggling. Also, Ive been told it cuts down on the security vessels showing up while you're doing something like bounty hunting, ie more targets for you. etc., etc...

Having 'Report crimes against me' on basically means that the cops will scramble out to the area to help if you are attacked

Turning it off was useful in the days before the bounty claim mechanic was changed.

When it was last hit that got the bounty in all cases, the authority vessels were frequently "kill stealing" from players, so turning off report crimes stopped them from turning up to provide this 'help'.

Nowadays getting the last shot in isn't as crucial, the player will always get the bounty as long as you have caused a minimum amount of damage.

This is really important to understand. If you have this off and a ship shoots you, they won't become wanted for it, and if they aren't already wanted then you will be committing a crime by firing back at them. Once upon a time it was common advice around here that people turn this setting off when bounty hunting so that security wouldn't show up and make the hunt messy. I think this, along with the sort of confusion visible further up this list (someone claiming turning it on means you report your own crimes to the police), is a major contributor to complaints about becoming wanted when engaging in self defense.

Alright thanks for the info, i finally get it. I'll probably turn it off for some bounty hunting, two, some time (even if not necessary) If i go for several hours, there are so many feds around i can't even get to the wanted ship before it's roasted. (they help spotting the bad guys though) so i'll play with the on/off quite a bit. I can still turn it back on when other potential pk-players are around.
