Reprojection ratio all over the place

Edit: Found the culprit. The one place I didn't think to look, obviously. Having tinkered with in-game settings, SteamVR settings and WMR settings to no effect I randomly checked Nvidia control panel the other day... Lo and behold, the power/performance settings had switched from max performance to default/normal settings. Probably through a driver update?

Anyway, I switched NCP back to best performance and hey presto, Legacy rocks solid 90 fps again, apart from the obvious hot spots.

So when optimising VRLegacy settings remember to balance all 4 (what a mess):
  • In-game
  • SteamVR
  • Windows Mixed Reality
  • Nvidia Control Panel

Still trying to figure out what is going on with my VR experience in Elite: Dangerous Legacy (HP Reverb). I use fpsVR to monitor performance.

For referecence: My i5 12600k and rtx3090 rocks Starwars Squadron at solid 90fps, ultra settings, no reprojection (0.5%). So it's not the hardware.

Reprojection is all over the place in E: D L. I can dial everything down to low, turn all settings in WMR and SteamVR to low, and Legacy still boots up with 33% reprojection (which seems to softlock fps to 60fps).

And then sometimes, for no apparent reason, Legacy snaps back in to normal mode mid-game and performs as expected (no reprojection and 90fps - less at stations and what not of course).

But I can't figure out why Legacy is behaving like this.

Does anyone have any clue what is going on here? Why is the game creating all this load/reprojection even at lowest possible settings?

ED at ultra VR? Even with 2x SS you should be achieving at least 72fps in VR with a 3090 in legacy. Even in Odyssey you should be able to achieve this by dialling down the SS.

Are you running any other apps on the background which might be best to be minimised?

Only the basics, all minimised; wmr, Steamvr, discord, google.

I've checked task manager. Nothing out of the ordinary.

What really bugs me is that the game randomly snaps back to expected performance, and then on next boot up it's back to massive reprojection. I can't reliably foresee or reproduce it.

Have you tried using Open Composite instead of SteamVR*? I think there is a guide thread in the VR forum somewhere here ...

Interestingly, this "up/down" performance happens to me too with my Quest 2. Usually when I jump to a new star system or log off to menu it "fixes" it. Happens most when I remove my headset to interact with the real world and then put it back on again. I can also sometimes fix it by turning the headset on and off. Don't know if this is the same as you are experiencing but having read some of your posts I don't know if anyone else responded with similar (albeit unhelpful) info.

*I don't have a Reverb but I vaguely remember reading here someplace that OpenComposite works with it when I was looking for info to get it working with my Quest 2.

Thanks. I'm not really interested in trying other software solutions right now, as Steam usually works just fine. I don't think it's Steam, as other VR games work just fine.

All NVCP setting are usually reset during driver updates.

Anyway, the power management setting having this effect makes sense. The default value allows the card to downclock to very low levels if GPU load isn't high enough and it won't always boost back up during transient loads. With prefer maximum performance the GPU clocks won't fall anywhere near as far as long as any 3D app is running, no matter what the actual load is.

Just a foot note.
Minimising background appz like discord, steam, WMR, etc do help reduce reprojection.
Along with aforementioned gpu power settings.
But another noted fooker is your monitor resolution. Mines down to 800x600 which takes alot of strain out of the equation.
But VR let's face it, isn't optimised as its no longer supported. Damn shame.
Hope I'm wrong on the last point? Iam out of date (just come back to elite)

its no longer supported
When did it stop being supported? Odyssey supported it at launch and I was still playing in VR two days ago. It remains an official feature and has received bug fixes and updates just like other features. Not implementing it for on-foot is not the same as not supporting it.

Oh then l stand corrected. I too have just recently come back & started playing elite in VR.
G2 reverb 3090fe combo hehe. And AFAIK fdev announced way back they'd no longer be developing VR. So if I'm wrong I stand corrected. BTW it still works for me.
My missus plays it now in VR too using her posh Q3. She ain't having any issues either. She's got a 3080.

Just stick to Legacy. It's the best version for VR.

And always check your Nvidia control panel. For some reason my 3090 randomly defaults/returns to balanced/normal power setting. It has to be set to maximum performance.
