Reward skill or interest without penalizing the lack of them. Have the original minigame randomly shorten each cycle of the probulator (by position of the target ring perhaps). If you succeed, on average you decrease your scanning time by half. If you don't care or aren't in the mood, you take the full time to complete the scan.
