Reputation is tooo difficult

Right now the only driving force is creds. I want to be a bud to the Empire but im having a hard time finding Strictly empire missions.... Unless i have to become Elite(dangerous etc) first to gain access to those?

This isn't a short-term game... keep plugging away and you'll make progress... sometimes you'll go backwards and others you'll leap forward... Don't give up... be bold and fight for everything!

What he said.

In life it takes effort to get good reputation but one bad act is remembered by everyone so it's right that negative effects should have greater weight than positive ones. It's also part of the system to discourage griefing, if it was easy to get back to normal people would be shooting each other left right and centre without a care in the world.

no matter how many missions I complete, there is no changing.

On your status screen you should see a blue pointing up arrow when you do something good, and a red pointing down arrow when you do something bad.

As it stands, the only way to reset factional reputation is to clear your save.

I do a bit a bounty hunting in my Cobra, and otherwise fly missions and trade to raise money in that endeavor. Occasionally, I accidentally hit a system authority vessel with a laser shot. So, what I'll usually do after that is fly immediately back to station, pay the fine, and then take a non-profit mission (and simultaneously fill up my cargo for a trade run), which gets my reputation from the downward red arrow back to the blue upward pointing arrow.

Of course, I'm doing this in the Founder's world in an attempt to get in good with the Pilot's Federation, and so far haven't been able nudge it to Friendly let alone to Allied -- still Neutral -- but I'll keep trying. Way I see it, the Pilot's Federation is really the shadow government that runs everything, so it's good to have friends in high places. :) Figured the way to go was ally with them and then venture out.

Do you by chance have a stolen cargo in your hold? :)
I think it's may be THE point: getting scanned with one smuggled item makes you lose faaaaaaaaar too much reputation.

For example, my own personal experience: i gained Alliance reputation to get the Alioth Permit. By the time i got to Allied with the Alioth Independents i was also at the Allied level with the whole Alliance. So i finish a smuggling mission, get the reputation to the needed level and then i finally get the Alioth permit. And then i joyously go to Alioth and go straight to Gotham Park... where i got my cargo scanned. Did i point out that the last mission was "find us ONE ancient artifact"? Well, i found two in the USS and i was so happy with the new permit i forgot to sell/get ride of the other one. Result? A 5000 credits fine. Oh and my overall Alliance reputation after smuggling went straight from ALLIED to NEUTRAL. Well, at least it didn't go HOSTILE.

So let me say it: the overall reputations hit on smuggling MAY be a little overkill. For example, one time during a trip around fed space, my mouse button number 2 got stuck while i was inside a space station and i ended up trying to just get out of a federal space station to find out my ship had a sudden need of firing his secondary weapons the second i undocked. And since i play keyboard and stick, it took me two deaths by station before realizing what the problem was (after a few minutes of flying away after unpowering my weapons and plugging unplugging most my controls). The impact of shooting straight into a fed station and getting killed twice was 5000 credits in fine too but it wasn't nearly as bad on my fed reputation it went from neutral to... neutral.

So the game should:
1) point out that getting caught smuggling will RUIN you reputation. And it's apparently worse than firing weapons in starport twice by a factor of A LOT.
2) find some way for us to know what are the actual punishments for each crime and what it means in term of reputation. Because it's clearly not really balanced and the idea of grinding something is nice but if some random thing can remove it nearly instantly and it's not obvious, well some people may get a little more angry about it than me.

Making things like the fine and reputation system clear for the player can't be a bad thing, i think.

Fly to the Empire and bury yourself into their good side. Make them friendly, or allied with you, do progression missions, and stay there for a few days-week. by then, Feds will turn to unfriendly.

Then, just start doing missions for the feds.

Just asking to make sure.
When you did run all those missions to recover your federation standings, you DID make sure the missions where from Federation aligned factions, and not from Independent ones ?
Only trying to rule out the obvious here. ;)

Not only that, but you did concentrate on doing missions for the major faction in the system, and stick with that system to get allied with the system, then move on to a different system and get allied with them?

I quickly got scanned and hostile with feds, so went to empire space. Got scanned and went hostile with them too. Now alliance are the only ones who will accept me lol.

I did something similar in that I wanted to help the alliance so attacked a wanted ship and tried to take back some documents but forgot that I had also some stolen goods in the hold that I found and so am unfriendly even though I have been helping a faction so now, if I have anything that needs to be smuggled, I fly to the Alliance space so that if I get caught, it wont matter that much as I still have the feds and imps to be friendly with.

I did missions for hours to raise rep with the alliance. Got allied with the main faction of leesti. One death (killed myself with my own missiles lol) and a lot of bounty hunting missions on my transaction aaaand... friendly again down from allied.

Reputation system is way too punitive and bugged and imbalanced.

It doesn't have to be transparent either but a kind of "rep sheet" that lists what you did good or bad would be great. Would add information and depth at the same time.

I was bounty hunter, my rep was unfriendly, I tried to be trader, selling stuff between two bases (boorring like hell) in just 2 travels I am friendly...

I went from neutral to allied with the Federation just from doing bounty hunting. No missions, just killing wanted ships at Barnard's Star and Alpha Centauri and turning the bounties in. Both my combat rank and rep went up.
However now it seems that my rep is going up and down when I accidentally hit a Fed or clean ship or by killing certain wanted ships associated with the Feds.

I think its fine as it is.

Need to work your way up. Rather than just do 20 missions and being allied with everyone.
