Reputation system bugged

After I finally got my new Cobra yesterday I got a little bold and tried some smuggling missions in imperial space. Three times the cops caught me and I got a hefty fine in addition to a reputation loss that send me down to "unfriendly" with the controlling Empire subfaction in the system (Herthans) and with the Empire as a whole. "Well, this was my own fault", I thought, "I botched up the smuggling and it's only realistic that my reputation with the corresponding faction suffers".
So to redeem myself I ran various humanitarian missions for this local Empire subfaction that yield no credits but only reputation. After about ten missions I finally got back to "neutral" with both the Empire subfaction and the main faction. So I presume it takes about three reputation gaining missions to counteract a reputation loss produced via receiving fines. (3 fines -> neutral to unfriendly; 10 rep missions -> unfriendly to neutral)
Anyway, happy with myself I logged of and went to sleep.

This morning I just wanted to continue my upwards trend in reputation with the Empire and logged in to do one or two more of those humanitarian missions before going of to work. But I was back down to "unfriendly" with the main faction (Empire) while my standings with the local subfactions hadn't changed (still at neutral).

I was logged of while this Empire reputation decrease took place. The only explanation I could think of was that some mission timed out while I was logged out, but alas, I didn't have any missions when I logged of (and neither when I logged in again).

I have already ticketed this, but given the complexity of the reputation system, can anyone enlighten me about if I overlooked something?

I'd be interesterd to hear a bit more detail about how the reputation system works too. I'm currently border-hopping between the Empire & Federation running missions one way and hauling cargo the other. Only done a few round trips but so far no change in my rep with either faction.

I'm wondering does one cancel the other out, rep-wise?

You might have had a mission expire overnight. It happened to me as well. If your mission expires you get negative rep.

Like I already wrote, I didn't have a mission that expired overnight. I didn't have any mission in my transaction tab. I actually wasn't doing anything in game either (since i was logged of), so this can only be a bug, can't it?

Check which faction is giving you a nice friendly light blue up arrow

This matches my experience from last night where I dumped a "no fine" mission after forgetting I had it and letting the timer run out. Seems about right (easier to lose rep than gain it).

Based on the information given it feels like a bug.

is hard to forget bad thing than remember good thing its sems only that.

Yes, I know, and I agree with the current, harsh reputation system. This way it is actually challenging to become a "Baron" or something similar, and not just a title you are given for lingering around long enough without actually contributing anything to the collective good of a faction.

But let's not get off topic here: the system is good in it's current implementation when it works! But the scenario I described clearly doesn't have anything to do with reputation losses being to punishing, but about the system apparently not working as intended.

Reputations system bugged!!?!??!?!?!?!!??!?!?! You don't sayyyyy!!!

Well, I wasn't to sure that it indeed was a bug, that's why I am asking the community about their experiences. The rep system is pretty complex - which I very much like, btw. - for example it seems that the main factions reputation varies from system to system and only always depends on the collective reputations of the main factions subfactions in a given system.

For example, if you have "unfriendly" reputation with 3 imperial subfactions in any system, the "Empire" main faction will also display "unfriendly" reputation, irrespective of your reputation with the main faction "Empire" in any other system (you might well be "friendly" or higher with the Empire in a second system if the respective subfactions there like you enough). I am not sure if that is intended (seems strange the whole huge Empire's attitude towards you only depends on your reputation with some current small regional factions.), or if I even understood it correctly.

But given this complexity of the reputation system I thought I might have overlooked some aspect which would explain my current reputation loss with the main faction.

Thanks for the response. I hope I get some feedback from FD about my ticket.

Just to let you guys know I reached the dizzy heights of recruit with the federal navy last night. I have been running missions in between BH to keep the local factions sweet and suddenly there was a donation mission for some non-lethal weapons for a reputation boost, I did the mission and after I ranked up to recruit on my Federal Navy standing.

Congratulations on the promotion, commander!

With your experience about gaining reputation and ranks, could you shed some light about the situation I described? Did you encounter something similar about having different reputation levels with the same main faction in different systems, depending on the respective local subfactions?

Could someone at least point me to some official thread about how the system works - or should work - in detail right now?

The reputation penalty is ridiculous. I built friendly rep with the fed and minor systems over the gamma period. I played at least three hours a day. All ruined by one scan for carrying cargo that the fed government of sol sent me to get. Now my repuation is ruined with the faction and with it my game. Players with neg rep need it restored. And wiping and starting a game is not a fix. Fixing the damage done and removing the bug is a fix.

we cant since we dont know, like many other mechanism of the game that the dev did not explain.
the empire faction was lock in beta/gamma so couldnt be test so now we reap the bad thing and there is bug. wait that the dev correct them if they want to (since the bounty bug was said since long and still here...)

I have to admit I like how the consequences of reputation changes play out. I was being interdicted and subsequently scanned by cops much more frequently when my reputation with the Empire dropped to unfriendly. Of course that was kind of tiresome, but it definitely adds an layer of immersion and realism and it's nice a smuggler that has been caught one time to often has to look out not being interdicted by local security again.

Nonetheless, the current bug - if someone at FD could please confirm it is one - makes it rather difficult (if not impossible) to reach higher reputation levels once you were unfriendly with a faction. A clarification would be greatly appreciated, here!

Rank has nothing to do with reputation. I think maybe rank gets you permits, but negative reputation can still get you shot.

I think there are two sets of players in game, those that have somehow got negative rep, and those that haven't yet. I'm pretty sure everyone that has gained negative rep now knows it is actually less work to clear save and regain your millions of credits than it is to grind to fix negative rep - I've only seen one report of anyone actually repairing their unfriendly rep with a major faction

I had a similar thing: ground some rep with a local faction and fed, was on a blue upwards arrow, definitely had no outstanding missions, went to bed and came back to find I had gone back to plain neutral. I hope that's not working as intended; life dictates that I never have time for more than a handful of misions at a time. I'll never get anywhere if that can all get reset by some automated process overnight.

It has harsh penalties, but its not bugged.

I'm allied with one subfaction but still neutral with the main faction (Empire; Glory to the Emperor!!). I'm heading over to a neighbouring Empire system to improve my rep with a different subfaction to see if that makes any difference with my overall Empire reputation. I'm three ranks in for Empire (??????, then Serf, then Master) but that does not affect my rep in the slightest as I am still neutral. I'm wondering if you must be allied with several subfactions before the main faction rep increases?

I can confirm a massive reduction in interdictions by system authorities when I'm flying in allied/friendly territory.
