I'm looking for some information regarding gathering meta alloys. I did a forum search which answered a few questions but raised others. Any help is appreciated.
So I'm at a point where I'd like to start getting into engineering and know I need meta alloys for FF in Deciat but until last night hadn't really started to actively look for them. During the burning station rescue event over the last couple of weeks I picked up a tip off mission that sent me to the Pleiades. Great I think I'll head there and grab the meta alloy for FF when I run the mission, 1 stone, two birds and I'll be off to Deciat. I had read that they drop from barnacles (and Thargoid installations as well apparently from what I've read) and knew there was a Thargoid presence in the Pleiades systems. So I head out from Sol and truck to the Pleiades to run the mission and then find a Thargoid bio site 1.6 klicks from my tip off mission waypoint. I head over, land, and deploy my SRV at the barnacle site. I scanned the barnacle and got a codex update and then start on it with the repeater (nervously waiting Momma Thargoid to come at me for disturbing her egg) nothing drops. I think maybe the repeater isn't gonna cut it for this job and so I load the SRV up and start at it from my Cobra with both lasers and multi-cannon still nothing. So I land the Cobra and get comfy in my bunk for a night of camping on Pleiades Sector IH-V c2-16 D 2 and log out for the night figuring I'll do a forum search and figure out what I'm doing wrong but I didnt see anything in the threads I looked at that spoke to mechanics other than " get them from barnacles" or go buy them.
My questions:
1. Am I correct with the process? i.e: Go to Thargoid bio site - scan - shoot barnacle - meta alloy drops - scoop meta alloy? Do I need AX weapons for this or is the SRV repeater adequate? See answer to 3.
2. I have read that the drop from Barnacles is cyclical and that perhaps Pleiades Barnacles don't drop the meta alloys. Is this correct? What should I look for when I scan the barnacles? I have seen references to "dead" barnacles in some posts. Upon scanning barnacles (tagged as “biological structures”) in the Pleaides I am receiving a “data compromised” message so it appears the Pleiades barnacle do not drop meta alloys at the moment.
3. Am I better off looking for a Thargoid Installation? Are they in all Thargoid systems or just certain ones? What is the mechanic for getting them to drop there? Yes or another nebulae known to have Thargoids i.e. Coalsack. I found 2 Thargoid installations while exploring around the Pleiades and was able to get meta alloys at both installations by scanning and then shooting the “biological structures” that can be found at them (different skin from a barnacle but same tag) from the SRV then scooping it like any cargo/ material. There are few other items available at the Thargoid Installations if you poke around/ explore the site a little.
4. Are the meta alloys used for more than the unlock? Should I grab a bunch or just the 1 for FF? Meta-alloys are also used for trade with technology brokers for some xeno items and you can also sell them to for credits. You also receive data packages for scanning the barnacles that can be sold through the contacts screen for additional credits.
5. Do I need a non corrosive cargo rack to transport the meta-alloys? No but you do for other Thargoid cannisters. Non corrosive cargo racks can be "bought" through a technology broker which can be found via the contact screen at some starports.
6. It seems carrying around any Thargoid materials increases the chance of being interdicted by them in hyperspace. Is the chance of interdiction related to the number of items on board? I was not interdicted despite carrying a meta alloy around the Pleiades for the better part of 2 weeks. It did seem to trigger some Thargoid related mail box mission offers in Maia so the game is reading it as some kind of trigger. Still unsure whether the number or type of Thargoid items (meta alloy versus resin, tissues, etc) has an impact on hyper-interdictions.
7. New information from EDO (thanks Kissamies): "If you have Odyssey, they added a number of surface ports in atmospheric planets around the Bubble that sell meta-alloys and nothing else. One such port is Kidman Beacon in the Gubiakum system."
Sorry for the litany. Any information, assistance, or other tips are greatly appreciated. (I am aware I can go to maia system and buy them as well but would rather collect them myself)
