I would love to have a search option by faction...sort of "nearest empire system" or "nearest high tech system"

I completely second this motion. It wouldn't be a terribly difficult thing to implement and would be incredibly useful.

I don;t know if it helps but you can switch to map view and select colour by faction or something. That way you can see where your nearest Imperial system is etc.

+1 for having something like this implemented in the game.

Until then, you can use this site to search for the nearest X station.

Let's say you want to find the nearest system with an Empire station...

1. Click on "Search" at the top
2. Check "Allegiance"
3. Select "Empire" in the combo-box
4. Type in the name of your current location
5. Choose a range you're willing to travel
6. Click on "Search" at the bottom

As you can see on the page, you can search for the nearest station via multiple category types.

Unfortunately, this is limited in that they only have data that has been submitted by players.
