Request to the clever folks here: Explorers map.

The more I take a look around where all those deeps space explorers went, the more I realize that some went quite far.

Some folks went to the core, visiting Saggitarius A (the super massive black hole in the center of the galaxy), others went to various nebulas, thousands of Light years away from Sol.

But there sadly doesnt seem to be a place to see where people went, and what they saw there. No place to just have all these information collected in a proper fashion.

Because of this, I call upon you, Elite Community, to create such a place.

The idea: Pretty simple. A map, of the entire Milky way. Nothing with exact system names and positions (thats just way way way to much, and something several people are already working on), but more like a grand overlook of the galaxy, with some zoom to see more specific features like nebulas.

On this map then, waypoints from explorers, together with links to screenshots or forum posts, so everyone can easily see where people went and what they saw there.

The easiest solution I can think of would be something like google maps. Crowd source the capture of map screenshots (top down), and stuff would be good in a couple of weeks.

More complicated, but far more useful, would be the ability to designate sectors, and thus allow to search for them on the map.

Anyone capable of doing this? I sadly have no clue, or time, to do something like this. :)

saw that one already, and no, not even close.

Showing systems is completly useless for a long range explorer map, as we wont ever get system positions for those far away sectors, not to mention that any kind of map database would die rather quickly if we try to feed it with a few million, if not billion, systems.

Check out the following thread :

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=61024

There are maps I made of the routes I took to Sagittarius A* and what to visit along the way. Plenty of videos of the points of interest that are out there too. I've tried to document everything I've done in that thread.

The maps give a rough idea of where interesting stuff is, but the fun is in finding it for yourself... for example Shapley 1 being one memorable moment and something I never knew existed it until I glimpsed it outside my cockpit window and made a detour to investigate!

The videos and screenshots contain some spoilers though so if you don't want to know what awaits you in the galactic core then don't watch 'em. ;)

Im following your thread Erimus, for quite a while now, because you do brilliant stuff. But thats not what I ment.

I dont need this stuff for myself to know where to go and what is interresting, thats something I take care of myself. What I want is a place to see where all the other deep space explorers went, and what they saw. Right now its just a mess trying to find these posts in the forums, between all the "LET US TELEPORT TO EVERYWHERE", "I DIED CRAP GAME!1!" and the always loved "FD WHAY DO YOU LET DEES EXPLOIDERS HAVE THEIR MONIEZ?!?!?!?!" threads that pop up daily here.

Basically a map that I can visit every now and then and take a look how far others went out, potentially even with the routes they took.

I've been asking for an explorers sub-forum for a while now. I think that would be a start. Then we could at least have all the exploration stuff kept together in one place. There are two excellent exploration threads in this forum already, Nutters guide that is the bible of exploration, and Patau82's Stellar Cartography Statistics thread. Both get swamped in no time and drop down the forum like a lead balloon.

If there was a sub-forum I'm sure someone would put the effort in to collating map data and creating a similar thread along side those two I mentioned. Somewhere where people can post their own maps and screenshots and begin collating the type of thing you're asking for.

Like you say, its a mess at the moment with stuff all over.
