Newcomer / Intro RES Bounty Hunting

So I went to the Leesti system when I was given the advice to for bounty hunting. I've found the RESs there, but everytime I go into one, there are almost no ships, and everytime there is, they're almost always system authority. And I'm yet to find a wanted ship. Am I missing something?

Also on a side note, is there any advantage to upgrading your power plant so your available power is more than your required?

RES Bounty Hunting is pretty much RNG on what you're going to get when you first enter the place, if the first time you enter you see a wanted python, then you should be set for atleast 2m creds an hour because generally the spawns will be from clippers to anacondas, but other times you get mostly sidewinders to vipers, just look for a system that has atleast two different RES's, if its not looking to promising check the other one and let the previous RES reset, this is what i've done the past couple weeks.

As for the power plant you should go for what your modules are asking for energy wise, i've never required more energy that what's actually used, the point of getting a bigger power plant is for getting bigger modules.

Yeah, only worry about new power plants if you're going to need the power for new modules (Shield Cell Banks eat a chunk of power, so adding that to your ship may require a better powerplant). Also keep in mind that more expensive doesn't always mean it's better. I've seen class 4 power plants sell for more money than class 5, but a cheaper 5 may yield more power (its bigger). Just be sure you have enough power before you undock, if you purchased new modules. Also, you can manage module priority, where certain modules can be turned off automatically if you somehow find yourself with a damaged, weakened power plant in combat.

If you're near Sol, hit up the Jupiter RES. It's been busy for the past couple days, at least for me.

I disagree about the pwer plants. Buy the biggest, best plant you can afford. Everything uses power to run and the more you have available the better. Especially weapon systems. And bigger stronger shields.

Higher rated power plants have better heat efficiency. They also have different weights and armour ratings. Those would be the only benefits for buying a power plant that went over your required power output.

Of course, all your other upgrades depend on the power plant, so it's an inevitable purchase.

As for the RES question - just supercruise out of the RES, turn around and drop back in to reset the instance until it spawns the kinds of ship you want.

once you're in the system it might look quite empty. Wait there for a while and the enemys will jump in.

But even if the ships are there it is true what the others said: the instances seem to have a random factor for which kinds of ship spawn there. If you have a python or something in that range in the first few minutes, others will spawn Otherwise these spawns will be very rare for the whole time you're there... You will always find sides, eagles and cobras though.

Power is always going to be your limiting factor when you start getting enough credits to kit out your ship. I like to upgrade plant and distributor first and get them out of the way. They'll let you upgrade other things later and likely have the power they need but also give immediate benefits to the modules you already have.
